Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Jai,

I have been in love with rap music since my childhood, and I really love the hip-hop and rap mixture in music. Last week i came to your concert at the BC Stadium; it was a fantastic performance and i really enjoyed the music you presented in the show.

In my mean time i also love to write and sing rap music and in future I am thinking about opening my own rap music company. I have been attending music classes since last 2 years, which really helped me improve my basic vocal skills. However, still i am lacking in my composition style.

Therefore, I want to take some classes from you to evolve my musical skills, so i can go ahead with rap music journey. I will really appreciate it and love it. Your support and music can really help me to build my personal music brand in future.

your faithfully,

Kuwerinder Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: describing your feelings about the performance, detailing your musical activities, and requesting help. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a performer. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, when you mention your musical activities, you could have provided more specific examples of your songwriting process or the types of rap you perform to make the letter more engaging. Similarly, the request for help is a bit vague; specifying what kind of mentorship or classes you are looking for would have strengthened the response. Overall, the task is fully addressed, but the depth of content could be improved to reach a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the concert experience to your personal background and finally to your request. Paragraphing is used to separate these distinct ideas, which helps the reader follow your train of thought. You use some cohesive devices such as 'However' and 'Therefore' to link ideas. However, the transition between the concert description and your personal musical activities is slightly abrupt. To improve, ensure that your sentences flow more naturally into one another. The use of referencing is generally clear, though some minor improvements in the variety of linking words would enhance the overall cohesion of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using terms like 'vocal skills,' 'composition style,' and 'musical journey.' The language is generally natural and appropriate for the context. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'In my mean time,' which is not a standard idiomatic expression. Additionally, 'rap music company' is a bit simplistic; 'music production label' or 'record label' would be more precise. While you successfully communicate your message, incorporating a slightly wider range of less common vocabulary related to the music industry would help elevate your score in this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I have been attending music classes since last 2 years, which really helped me.' There are several grammatical errors, particularly with articles (e.g., 'since last 2 years' should be 'for the last two years') and capitalization (e.g., 'i' instead of 'I'). You also have some minor punctuation errors, such as the missing comma after 'However.' While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on consistent capitalization and correct preposition usage will significantly improve your accuracy.
