Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear John,

I am writing to express my excitement and happiness that I experienced in the show at Toronto football stadium on your Canada tour.

Fortunately, I was able to acquire the front row seats on the first day of your performance, watching you that close kicked butterflies in my stomach. I was impressed by the extraordinary synchronization of your band, and the most exciting part was your solo unplugged performance; first time I could listen to your bare voice which was very comforting and soothing.

I would take the opportunity to let you know that I am also an amateur musician and have a group with which I also perform at local gatherings and organized events. Currently, my focus is to improve singing and to get deep understanding of musical instruments, and to acquire a national level event for my band.

It would be amazing if you could help me with the advertising, marketing activities. I was hoping to work with you for inter-country events, so I could learn the working dynamics of an organized music company.

I request you to provide me with any opportunities if available and looking forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards,

Nishant Shrivastava

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly express your appreciation for the performance, describe your own musical background, and make a specific request for assistance. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a performer, maintaining a respectful and enthusiastic register throughout. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the description of the concert experience. To reach a higher band, ensure that the request for help is slightly more realistic or clearly articulated, as asking a professional singer for help with 'marketing activities' is a broad request. Overall, the response is fully relevant and meets all requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your narrative easily. You use a range of cohesive devices such as 'Fortunately', 'Currently', and 'It would be amazing if', which connect your thoughts effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, the concert details, your personal background, and the request. The flow is natural, and there is no confusion regarding the sequence of events or the purpose of each section. The structure is sound and supports the overall message well.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, using phrases like 'extraordinary synchronization', 'unplugged performance', and 'working dynamics' effectively. There is an attempt to use more sophisticated language, which is generally successful. However, there are minor issues with collocation and word choice, such as 'acquire the front row seats' (better: 'secure front row seats') and 'acquire a national level event' (better: 'secure a spot at a national level event'). Despite these minor inaccuracies, the vocabulary is more than adequate for the task, and the meaning is always clear. The range is sufficient to convey your enthusiasm and professional aspirations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the conditional 'It would be amazing if you could help me...' and the participial phrase 'watching you that close kicked butterflies in my stomach'. While there are some grammatical slips, such as 'first time I could listen' (missing an article: 'the first time') and 'provide me with any opportunities if available' (slightly awkward phrasing), these errors do not impede communication. The majority of your sentences are clear and error-free. To improve, focus on article usage and ensuring that complex sentences are punctuated correctly to maintain a high level of accuracy.
