Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear sir or madam,

I have attended many concert but recently went to your concert and i fell in love with one of your band members songs. I am writing this to express my gratitude and excitement for the one particular singer of your band.

I loved your performance and it was very energetic and refreshing. In my opnion ,music is souls food. It is also very important for mental well being. Your songs lyrics were also very heart touching.i would love to attend all your shows.

As i told you, music is my favourite hobby and in my spare time i would love to do singing and rapping. But due to lack of facilities I didn’t choose this as my career. My friends also motivate me to sing a song for them as well.

I want you to help me to learn some trick of music so i can continue my passsion for the music. I would like to wait for your positive response.

Yours faithful,

Nida maroof

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You expressed your feelings about the performance, described your musical activities, and requested help. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat basic. For example, when asking for help, you mention wanting to learn 'some trick of music,' which is quite vague. To achieve a higher band, you should provide more specific details about what kind of musical guidance you are seeking (e.g., vocal techniques, songwriting advice, or stage presence). The tone is generally appropriate for a letter to a singer, though the opening 'Dear sir or madam' is slightly impersonal given the context of writing to a specific performer.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your ideas. You use some basic cohesive devices like 'As i told you' and 'But due to,' which help link your sentences. However, the flow between sentences can be a bit mechanical. There is a lack of variety in transition words, and some sentences feel slightly disconnected. To improve, try using a wider range of linking phrases to connect your ideas more fluidly. Additionally, ensure that your paragraphing is consistent; you have a clear structure, but the internal cohesion within the paragraphs could be strengthened by using more sophisticated referencing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You have an adequate vocabulary to convey your message, using terms like 'gratitude,' 'energetic,' and 'refreshing.' However, there are several instances of awkward phrasing and word choice, such as 'music is souls food' (should be 'soul food') and 'learn some trick of music.' There are also some spelling errors, such as 'opnion' and 'passsion,' and capitalization issues with 'i.' While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning, they limit the score. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise collocations and ensure your spelling and capitalization are accurate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Common issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'I have attended many concert' should be 'concerts'), missing articles, and inconsistent capitalization of the pronoun 'I.' Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with spacing around commas and periods. While your meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors is noticeable. To improve, focus on proofreading your work to catch basic errors in pluralization, article usage, and sentence-level punctuation.
