Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mr. Diljit,

I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to express my gratitude about the music concert that was performed by you on July,20.

You had done an outstanding performance in your recent show. No doubt, your concerts are on top level every time; however, this time you came to Calgary to perform your music concert. I attended this concert with my family and we enjoyed a lot. As I am Indian, so this concert gave me an opportunity to everyone to connect with our culture and heritage.

Moreover, I love playing musical instruments and sing songs. Your concert encouraged me to develop my musical skills. I am really good at playing Violin and Harmonium. I usually take part in community concerts to build my confidence. My friends always praise my performance. Therefore, I believe that taking music classes is really beneficial to improve my skills.

I would be grateful if you could help me which musical instruments I have to learn. Interestingly, there are various sources available from where

I can learn music but a good advice is always helpful to get a right direction and become successful.

I am eagerly waiting for your next concert. I look forward to hearing a positive response from you.

Yours faithfully,

Harjot

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter covers all three bullet points effectively. You clearly express your appreciation for the performance, describe your musical background with the violin and harmonium, and explain your request for guidance. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a performer, and the purpose is clear throughout. To reach a higher band, ensure that the request for help is more specific; for example, instead of asking 'which musical instruments I have to learn'—which is slightly unclear given you already play two—you could ask for advice on professional techniques or repertoire selection to further your career.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a distinct aspect of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Therefore', and 'Interestingly' to link ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or forced. For instance, the transition 'As I am Indian, so this concert...' is grammatically redundant. Improving the flow between sentences by using a wider variety of cohesive devices and ensuring that referencing is precise would enhance the overall readability and logical progression of the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'gratitude', 'outstanding', 'heritage', and 'beneficial'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'performed by you' (passive voice is a bit clunky here; 'your performance' is better) and 'give me an opportunity to everyone' (which is grammatically incorrect). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message clearly, incorporating more precise collocations or less common expressions related to music and performance would help elevate your score to the next level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'You had done an outstanding performance' (should be 'gave' or 'delivered'), 'I am really good at playing Violin' (missing article 'the'), and 'help me which musical instruments' (should be 'help me decide which...'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede the overall communication of your message. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement, correct article usage, and ensuring that complex sentence structures are constructed accurately.
