Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing this letter to share my experience and appreciate your outstanding performance in concert at City Hall, Toronto, and need an advice from you for my carrier.

It was an amazing feeling, I was mesmerized by your natural voice and how you involve the audience with you during performance. I love your confidence and body language. I also practicing music from last 4 years. I stared by playing guitar, and now I am doing vocal practice too.

Recently, I started performing at public gathering like, birthday parties, club and etcetera. However, I feel always feel nervous while performing, due to lack of confidence. Although, I enjoy singing, yet sometime I am struggling with vocal control and the selection of songs.

Since, you are an experienced singer, please guide me about how I can improve and develop mu musical skills. If possible, I would appreciate if you will give some advice on vocal control or recommended a good vocal coach or allow me to attend one of your workshops.

Thanks for inspiring young generation. I sincerely hope for your response and guidance.

Yours faithfully,

Rose Marry

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly express your admiration for the performance, describe your musical background (guitar and vocals), and explain your request for guidance regarding stage fright and vocal control. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a performer. However, the development of ideas is somewhat basic. To reach a higher band, you could provide more specific details about your musical activities or the exact nature of the workshops you hope to attend. The opening salutation 'Dear Sir/Madam' is slightly inconsistent with the prompt's instruction to write to the singer, as you would typically use their name if known, but this does not significantly detract from the overall task completion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. There is a clear progression of ideas from the initial appreciation to your personal background and finally your request for help. You use some cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Although', and 'Since', which help connect your thoughts. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with punctuation and sentence flow, such as the comma splice in 'It was an amazing feeling, I was mesmerized'. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring correct punctuation between independent clauses would enhance the flow and cohesion of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'mesmerized', 'confidence', and 'inspiring'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'need an advice' (advice is uncountable) and 'carrier' (should be 'career'). Additionally, 'I also practicing' is a grammatical error that impacts the lexical presentation. While you successfully convey your meaning, the vocabulary is generally functional rather than sophisticated. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and ensuring that word forms are used correctly in context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the 'Although... yet...' construction. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include 'I also practicing' (missing auxiliary verb), 'I stared by playing' (spelling error for 'started'), 'at public gathering' (missing article), and 'recommended a good vocal coach' (incorrect tense/form). While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they are frequent enough to limit the score. Increasing your control over verb tenses and subject-verb agreement will help you achieve a higher band.
