Dear .................. ,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Rohan,
I, Zinal Patel, have attended your last concert at Sardar Stadium in Surat. I am writing this letter to express my honest feelings about that concert.
I must say that you possess extraordinary singing skills. Your way of singing really amazed me. The face expressions that you were giving while singing have made your performance exceptional. Moreover, because of the pauses that you were doing in between made your performance feel alive.
I am a fan of music. I am attending music classes on weekends at Navrang classes in Surat. I also upload my singing videos on my YouTube channel 'SingWithMe' sometimes. My major skill is guitar playing which I am practicing from a long time.
I will be very grateful to you if you can help me in improving my singing skills. If you can review some of my videos from my YouTube channel or give me a chance to perform in front of you once, then it will be very helpful for me.
I hope you will consider my request and give me a chance.
See you soon.
Thanking you,
Yours Sincerely,
Zinal Patel.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly express your admiration for the performance, provide relevant details about your musical background (classes and YouTube channel), and make a specific request for mentorship. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a performer, maintaining a polite and enthusiastic register throughout. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task requirements, ensuring the reader understands your purpose immediately. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly more on the specific musical activities to show a deeper connection to your craft.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your train of thought easily. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'because of' to link ideas. However, the transition between sentences could be more varied to improve the flow. For instance, some sentences feel slightly disjointed. Using a wider range of linking words or referencing pronouns would help create a more seamless progression of ideas throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'extraordinary singing skills' and 'performance feel alive' are effective. However, there are some minor issues with collocation and word choice, such as 'practicing from a long time' (should be 'practicing for a long time') and 'face expressions' (should be 'facial expressions'). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the use of vocabulary from being considered highly flexible or precise. Expanding your repertoire of descriptive adjectives and idiomatic expressions would enhance your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is generally effective. There are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'I, Zinal Patel, have attended' (should be 'I attended' as it refers to a specific past event) and 'the pauses that you were doing' (should be 'the pauses you made'). Additionally, the sentence 'because of the pauses that you were doing in between made your performance feel alive' is grammatically incomplete as it lacks a main subject. Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear, and your control over basic structures is solid.
