Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Daljit,
I hope you are doing great. I am writing this about your last concert at the Toronto CAA Centre, which went with huge success. I attended that show with my husband and we both enjoyed the performances a lot.
Coming to your overall performance, that was outstanding. You sang all the songs with full energy and every single person was feeling the connectivity with you. I must say your all outfits took my heart.
There are a few musical activities that I love to do in my me time which are playing piano and beating drums. I have not learned to play these instruments because learning institutions charges are very high and I am unable to afford it.
I would really appreciate it if you could help me to learn how to play the piano and drums thoroughly. In addition, I will not have any objection if you can assign any other of your team member who is an expert in this.
I am looking forward to your prompt response.
Yours sincerely,
Parminder Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter covers all three bullet points effectively. You clearly express your appreciation for the performance, describe your musical interests (piano and drums), and make a specific request for assistance. The tone is appropriate for a semi-formal letter to a performer. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands your purpose immediately. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on the 'musical activities' section to make the connection between your current skill level and your desire for mentorship more vivid, but overall, the task requirements are fully met.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use some cohesive devices like 'Coming to your overall performance' and 'In addition' to link your thoughts. However, the transition between the concert feedback and your personal musical activities is slightly abrupt. Using more varied linking words or phrases would improve the flow and make the progression between ideas feel more natural and sophisticated.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You use a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly, such as 'outstanding', 'connectivity', and 'thoroughly'. There are some minor issues with collocation and word choice, such as 'went with huge success' (should be 'was a huge success') and 'learning institutions charges' (should be 'tuition fees'). Additionally, 'took my heart' is not a standard English idiom; 'captured my heart' or 'impressed me' would be more natural. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over idiomatic expressions and collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'your all outfits' (should be 'all your outfits') and 'assign any other of your team member' (should be 'assign another member of your team'). The use of articles and pluralization needs more attention. Despite these errors, the sentence structure is generally sound, and the errors do not cause confusion for the reader. Incorporating a wider variety of complex sentence forms with greater accuracy would help elevate your score.
