Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to you to share my experience about your last month concert in Surrey. I want to express my feelings that your concert was magical and felt that it connects directly to the heart of people who are listening. Its was perfect blend of music and lyrics linking to the soul of music lover.

I was playing guitar with back performers in the concert and could able to match the tones of guitar with the lyrics creating a overall musical experience cinematic. I started learning guitar 5 years ago by seeking training from professional music academy. Since then, I am constantly working in back performers for various concert but when I performed in your concert I really felt that the taste of both matches with each other and we could vibe better together.

If you could recall your experience and want to connect, I am waiting.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You expressed your feelings about the concert, described your musical background, and explained how you would like the singer to help you. However, the development of these points is somewhat limited. For instance, the request for help is quite vague; you mention wanting to 'connect' but do not specify how the singer could assist you (e.g., mentorship, collaboration, or advice). To reach a higher band, ensure your ideas are more fully extended and specific to the context of the letter.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is generally coherent, and the progression of ideas is logical. You use paragraphing to separate your feelings from your background and request. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical. For example, the transition between the second and third paragraph is abrupt. Additionally, there are some referencing issues, such as 'the taste of both matches', which is slightly unclear. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that pronouns clearly refer to their antecedents would enhance the flow of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'magical', 'cinematic', and 'professional'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'back performers' is not the standard term for backing musicians or session musicians. 'Taste of both matches' is also unnatural in this context. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise vocabulary to convey your meaning effectively. Expanding your knowledge of collocations related to music and professional collaboration would be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. Examples include 'last month concert' (should be 'last month's concert'), 'Its was' (should be 'It was'), and 'could able to' (a redundancy; should be 'was able to'). Additionally, there are issues with article usage and verb tense consistency. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they are frequent enough to limit your score in this criterion. Focus on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and tense consistency.
