Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Mr. Ravichandran,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing to appreciate your recent performance in a live concert which was organized by Sony music in Toronto Roger's stadium.

To begin with, the concert was held to represent the multinational music festival which was represented by Sony, on the 21st August. I thoroughly enjoyed your performance and I fell in love with your voice, especially for the folk songs. Additionally, the performance was more energetic and creative because you have created some new tunes by using different instruments to entertain audience.

I am particularly interested in playing guitar and piano but owing to some other priorities I am facing significant challenges in practicing it daily. Occasionally, I attend the different musical festivals to learn more about the music and the other instruments that they use to develop the songs.

As a result, I would be grateful if you could provide me with some one-on-one lecture sessions on how to play guitar and other musical instruments. I would also appreciate your virtual support and assistance to improve my confidence levels and performance.

Thank you for the creative and fabulous performance and I hope you consider my request.

Yours sincerely,

Raj Kumar Pratap

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly expressed your appreciation for the performance, provided relevant details about your own musical interests (guitar and piano), and made a specific request for mentorship. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a public figure. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. To reach a higher band, ensure that the connection between your musical activities and the request for help is more seamless; while you mention your challenges, the transition to asking for one-on-one lessons could be slightly more nuanced to reflect a more natural request.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. You have used cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Additionally', and 'As a result' to guide the reader through your points. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the different requirements of the task. The progression of ideas is smooth, and the referencing is clear throughout. To improve further, try to vary your cohesive devices slightly more, as some of the transitions feel a bit standard or mechanical. Overall, the structure is very clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, such as 'multinational', 'energetic', and 'assistance'. The language is generally precise and appropriate for the context. There are a few minor issues with collocation, such as 'organized by Sony music in Toronto Roger's stadium', where 'at the Rogers Centre in Toronto' would be more natural. Additionally, 'provide me with some one-on-one lecture sessions' is slightly awkward; 'private tutoring' or 'mentorship' would be more idiomatic. However, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly and effectively throughout the letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. Most of your sentences are error-free and easy to understand. There are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'the concert was held to represent the multinational music festival which was represented by Sony', where the repetition of 'represent/represented' makes the sentence clunky. Also, 'practicing it daily' should be 'practicing them' to agree with the plural 'guitar and piano'. Despite these minor errors, your control over grammar is good, and your meaning is never obscured by these slips.
