Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Taylor Swift,

I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing this letter to say thank you to you for the amazing experience i had while attending your concert.

I really enjoyed a lot at your concert. It was my first time i was attending the concert. And I am so glad that I took this decision. I have only listen to you on TV or music apps but it was a dream come true for me to see you live and enjoying your concert. Your performance was absolutely amazing. Your live singing is same as we listen to your recordings. The way you were engaging the audiences and coming to them and allowing them for selfies was lovely gesture from you. My enjoyment was double because i am really fond of singing personally. I like to play guitar and sing songs. I also took part in events held in my city and was awarded as the best singer. The fact that you are my favorite singer so it pumps my excitement. I also had a request regarding this. I would be on the seventh heaven in case you give me opportunity to be part of your concert at some time. I would love to give auditions so that you can see my talent and on the basis of that you can decide that I am capable or not.

It will be greatest opportunity for me to be with you. It would be grateful if you help me with that.

Thank You,

Yours Faithfully,

Mehak

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly expressed your feelings about the performance, provided relevant details about your own musical background, and explained how you would like the singer to assist you. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a performer, and the purpose is clear throughout. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are developed with more sophistication; for instance, instead of simply stating you were awarded as the best singer, you could briefly describe the type of events or the nature of your musical style to make the letter more engaging and personal.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the initial appreciation to personal details and finally to the request. You use basic cohesive devices like 'I also' and 'The fact that' to link ideas. However, the paragraphing is somewhat weak; the second paragraph is quite long and contains several distinct ideas that could have been separated for better readability. Additionally, some transitions feel a bit mechanical. Using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring each paragraph focuses on a single clear theme would improve the flow and structure of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'dream come true' and 'seventh heaven' are used effectively to express your enthusiasm. However, there are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'I really enjoyed a lot at your concert' (which should be 'I enjoyed your concert a lot') and 'lovely gesture from you' (which would be more natural as 'a lovely gesture on your part'). Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise adjectives and collocations related to music and performance would enhance the quality of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'I have only listen to you' (should be 'listened'), 'It was my first time i was attending' (should be 'attending'), and 'It would be grateful if you help me' (should be 'I would be grateful'). Additionally, there are some punctuation and capitalization errors, such as the lowercase 'i'. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage, and ensure that you proofread your work to catch these small but frequent slips.
