Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear sir,

I am writing this letter to let you know that I recently attended your concert at Citadel Halifax. It was fully packed, and I hardly got the tickets for it, through one of my relatives.

I would like to tell you that it was so mesmerizing for me and while coming to the end I got emotional on the last song.

Though, I always idolize you as my role model, and my passion for music is solely because of you. I would like to inform you that, I do practice myself at voice local. It's the same place where you used to go during the adolescence age.

I would like to request you that if possible could you help me to improvise my classical notes. I am always struggling while recording my songs. It would be most appreciated, if you would spare your precious time towards your fan's wish.

I hope to see you again in my city for the concert.

see you at concert

yours faithfully

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You successfully describe your feelings about the concert, mention your musical background at 'voice local', and make a clear request for help with your classical notes. The tone is generally appropriate for a letter to a singer, although the opening 'Dear sir' is a bit generic given the context of writing to a specific performer. The ideas are relevant and clearly communicated, fulfilling the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your points easily. You use some cohesive devices like 'Though' and 'It would be most appreciated', which help link your ideas. However, the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother. The use of referencing is generally clear, though the flow between sentences occasionally feels a bit mechanical. Overall, the structure is logical and supports the development of your message.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'mesorizing', 'idolize', and 'adolescence' correctly. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'voice local' (which is unclear) and 'improvise my classical notes' (where 'improve' or 'refine' would be more accurate). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the vocabulary from reaching a higher band. Expanding your range of collocations would help improve your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'I hardly got the tickets' (should be 'I barely managed to get tickets'), 'during the adolescence age' (should be 'during my adolescence'), and 'spare your precious time towards' (should be 'spare your precious time for'). Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout the letter. The punctuation is generally functional, though the closing 'see you at concert' lacks proper capitalization and formal structure.
