Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Michael Jackson,
I wanted to write to you to appreciate your performance in the Jackson 5 concert that was held at the O2 Arena on 3rd of July.
It was a treat to hear you perform live for the first time. Although the other singers also sang well but I particularly found you to be the singer with the most soulful vocals. Moreover, the way you made so much effort connecting with the audience mid performance is like none else.
I am a music enthusiast and have always enjoyed playing musical instruments. I learned playing the guitar when I was in school. Currently, I am taking piano lessons alongside my university studies. I play the guitar at different cafes during the weekends. My future goal is pursue a career in instrumentals in the long term.
It would be an honor for me if you would allow me to work as an intern with your band. This would expose me to a professional environment where I can polish my skills.
Yours sincerely,
Sandra Kamrani

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response successfully covers all the required bullet points of the task. You clearly express your positive feelings about the performance, stating that it was a treat and that you found him to have the most soulful vocals. You also provide relevant details regarding your musical activities, such as playing the guitar since school, taking piano lessons, and performing at cafes during weekends. Furthermore, you explain how you would like him to help by allowing you to work as an intern with his band to polish your skills. The tone is appropriately polite and semi-formal for a fan letter. All parts of the prompt are fully addressed, showing a clear purpose and appropriate development of ideas throughout the letter.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically sequenced, moving smoothly from the purpose of the letter and your feelings about the concert, to your background in music, and finally to your request for an internship. Paragraphing is used effectively and appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct topic or bullet point. Cohesive devices such as 'Although', 'Moreover', and 'Currently' are used well to link ideas, although referencing and transitions could be slightly more sophisticated to reach the highest bands. Overall, the message progresses clearly and is very easy to follow from beginning to end.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient and flexible range of vocabulary for this task, incorporating appropriate terms such as 'music enthusiast', 'soulful vocals', 'professional environment', and 'polish my skills'. There are some minor lexical or collocation slips, such as 'learned playing' instead of 'learned to play' or 'pursue a career in instrumentals' which sounds slightly unnatural compared to 'instrumental music'. However, these vocabulary choices do not impede communication at all and show an adequate attempt to use less common items with a good awareness of style.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The writing exhibits a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as concessive clauses ('Although the other singers also sang well but...') and relative clauses. There is one minor grammatical flaw in the sentence 'Although the other singers also sang well but I particularly found...', where the inclusion of both 'Although' and 'but' creates a redundant conjunction. Aside from this minor error, the majority of your sentences are accurate, and punctuation is handled well throughout. Your grammar shows good control and does not interfere with the clarity of your message.
