Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mr. Aujla,
I am writing to express my feeling regarding your performance in a concert that I recently attended and seek your assitance to enhance my artistic skill.
Your performance was up to the mark, and I really enjoyed that day. As I first time heard your songs lively, you have such a sweet voice that grabs everone's attention. Your songs gave me energy to enjoy myself and acted as a stress buster for me.
I am also fond of some musical activities such as playing piano, violin, and singing traditional songs. In marriages, I often sing songs with these musical instruments and every time I receive complements from others.
I would be grateful if you could help me to enhance my this artistic ability. Could you give me tips how can I become efficient? Besides that, if it is possible, may I meet you for discussing my musical abilities.
I look forward to hearing from you at your earliest convenience.
Yours sincerely,
Prabh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You successfully covered all parts of the task prompt. You explained your positive feelings about the singer's performance, mentioning how his sweet voice grabbed everyone's attention and acted as a stress buster. You also provided details about your musical activities, such as playing the piano and violin and singing traditional songs at marriages. Finally, you clearly explained how you would like his help, asking for tips on efficiency and requesting a meeting to discuss your abilities. The purpose of the letter is clear, and the tone is appropriately polite and enthusiastic throughout, fulfilling the requirements for Band 7.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
Your letter is logically organised with a clear paragraph structure. Each paragraph has a distinct focus: introduction, reaction to the performance, musical background, request for help, and sign-off. You used some basic cohesive devices and referencing well, such as 'Besides that' and 'I would be grateful if'. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or abrupt, such as moving from the performance paragraph to your personal musical activities. Paragraphing is used appropriately, ensuring the reader can follow your narrative easily, aligning well with the Band 7 descriptors.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrated a sufficient range of vocabulary with some attempts at less common items, such as 'stress buster' and 'earliest convenience'. However, there are a few word choice and collocation errors, such as writing 'assitance' instead of 'assistance', 'lively' instead of 'live', and 'complements' instead of 'compliments'. You also wrote 'enhance my this artistic ability', which contains a minor grammatical clash in vocabulary referencing. These occasional inaccuracies prevent a higher score, but your vocabulary is adequate to communicate your message clearly, fitting the Band 6 profile.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You used a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating conditional structures ('if it is possible') and relative clauses. There are several grammatical errors throughout the text, including spelling slips ('assitance', 'everone'), missing prepositions, and awkward phrasing such as 'As I first time heard your songs lively'. Another error occurs in indirect questioning: 'Could you give me tips how can I become efficient?' should use statement word order ('how I can become efficient'). These errors occasionally interrupt the flow, but they do not impede overall communication, placing your grammar firmly at Band 6.
