Dear .................. ,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mr. Thompson,

I am writing this letter to admire you as your recent performance at Syndey Tower Hall has been experienced by me during the music concert last week.

Since childhood, I have been listening to your songs and music, but that in-person nostalgic experience was just another level. Now, I am not only a fan of your singing, but of you as a person too. I would like to mention that music is a significant part of my life too because of my keeness in singing, and you have always been my role model to do better each day.

It would be really beneficial for me if you could lend me some assistance in my music amelioration journey. Could you facilitate me to improve few particular notes and give an overall guidance for the journey of singing. Moreover, I would love to work for you; can I get some? I would be quite grateful for that.

Eagerly waiting for your response.

Yours trustworthy,

James Clark.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully covers all the required bullet points in the prompt. You begin the letter by expressing your strong admiration for the singer and describing your feelings about his recent performance at Sydney Tower Hall ('that in-person nostalgic experience was just another level'). You also give details of your musical activities, mentioning that you have been listening to him since childhood and that music is a significant part of your life due to your keenness in singing. Finally, you clearly explain how you would like him to help you ('lend me some assistance in my music amelioration journey' and 'give an overall guidance'). The tone is appropriately polite and semi-formal, fulfilling the requirements of General Training Task 1 very well.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organised with a clear beginning, body paragraphs addressing specific aspects of the prompt, and an appropriate sign-off. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate your feelings about the concert, your musical background, and your request for help. Cohesive devices are generally handled well, such as 'Since childhood', 'Moreover', and 'It would be really beneficial'. However, referencing and transitions are occasionally slightly awkward, such as the sudden shift in the third paragraph to asking for a job ('I would love to work for you; can I get some?'), which slightly disrupts the smooth flow of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate to good range of vocabulary for this task, attempting some less common phrases such as 'nostalgic experience', 'significant part', and 'amelioration journey'. However, there are some unnatural word choices and collocations that prevent a higher score. For example, 'admire you as your recent performance... has been experienced by me' sounds overly passive and unnatural. Similarly, 'improve few particular notes' is grammatically imprecise (missing 'a'), and 'music amelioration journey' is an unusual collocation; 'musical development' or 'musical journey' would be far more natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The letter displays a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the conditional structure 'It would be really beneficial for me if you could lend me some assistance'. You show good control over punctuation and sentence boundaries. However, there are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings throughout the text. For instance, 'has been experienced by me' is unnecessarily wordy and awkward. In the third paragraph, 'improve few particular notes' is missing the article 'a', and 'can I get some?' is overly informal and imprecise given the context. Despite these errors, communication is never impeded.
