Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The student successfully covers all three bullet points required by the task prompt. First, the writer expresses strong positive feelings about the performance, stating that the voice was 'melodious' and the guitar playing 'gave me goosebumps.' Second, details of musical activities are included by mentioning that the writer is also a musician who understands the practice required to reach such a level. Third, the letter clearly explains how the singer's help is desired, specifically requesting guidance and some of the singer's time. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a singer, although the opening salutation 'Dear sir' is slightly too formal for a celebrity fan letter, and the name used is generic. Ideas are relevant and fully developed for a General Training Task 1 response, earning a solid Band 7.0 score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter follows a clear logical organization with a traditional greeting and sign-off, although punctuation and capitalization errors in the text slightly disrupt the flow. Paragraphing is used to separate distinct ideas: paragraph one introduces the concert and performance, paragraph two elaborates on the emotional impact, and paragraph three discusses the writer's own musical background and request for help. Cohesive devices are used adequately, though simpler connectors dominate. Referencing is mostly clear, allowing the reader to follow the progression of ideas easily from the concert experience to the personal appeal. While the paragraphing and sequencing are logical, mechanical errors in punctuation prevent it from reaching a higher band, placing it firmly at Band 6.5.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, successfully employing words and phrases such as 'melodious,' 'goosebumps,' 'accurately,' and 'guidance.' However, there are noticeable lexical and spelling inaccuracies, such as 'especiall' instead of 'especially,' 'experiece' instead of 'experience,' and the run-on typo 'soget' instead of 'to get.' While the writer attempts less common vocabulary items, these errors and slightly repetitive phrasing prevent a higher score. Nonetheless, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning without impeding communication, representing a standard typical of Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the concessive and relative clauses seen in '...i will remember this day for the rest of my life as you have made it so special.' However, there are frequent punctuation and capitalization errors throughout the text, including lowercase 'i' pronouns and missing initial capital letters at the beginnings of sentences. There is also a tense inconsistency in the first paragraph ('last saturday i have attended' instead of 'attended'). While these errors do not impede overall communication, they occur too frequently for the writer to achieve a Band 7.0. The control of grammar is generally adequate for basic communicative tasks, deserving a Band 6.0.
