Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Diljeet,

I'm writing to let you know that I recently went to your concert, and I'm impressed with your voice.

I'm so glad to enjoy your concert, and your performance on stage was outstanding. Your sense of style matched your personality at that time. I felt that hope, so I was with you on stage and started singing with you.

I enjoy a lot of musical activities, like dancing with co-singers, and in concert, some vendors played your song lists, which allowed them to get more customers. Some shopkeepers were selling your posters, and i bought one of them for my room.

As I told you, you are my role model. I want your help to build my career in the music industry, like I want you to assist me how to use music instrument, gitar, which you played in your concert. I really want to look for your reply.

Yours faithfully,

Muskan

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response successfully covers all three bullet points required in the task instructions. You clearly stated how you feel about Diljeet's performance, noting that you were 'impressed with your voice' and that your 'performance on stage was outstanding.' You also provided details of your musical activities, such as dancing with co-singers and buying a poster for your room, although some of these details stray slightly into general observations of the concert venue rather than purely your own musical pursuits. Finally, you explained how you would like him to help you by stating, 'I want you to assist me how to use music instrument, gitar.' The tone is generally appropriate for a fan writing to a singer, though the purpose is occasionally slightly muddled by irrelevant details.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical sequence from expressing admiration to detailing activities and asking for assistance. You used basic cohesive devices and referencing appropriately, such as 'As I told you' and 'which you played.' However, the paragraphing is somewhat weak and irregular, with multiple short, disjointed paragraphs that break the flow of ideas. Additionally, some transitions feel a bit abrupt, such as the shift from your personal feelings about the stage to vendors playing song lists. Overall, information is communicated fairly clearly, but the structural layout needs better management to achieve a higher band.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to convey your message effectively. You attempt some less common vocabulary and descriptive phrases, such as 'outstanding,' 'role model,' and 'personality.' However, there are notable word choice and collocation errors, such as 'glad to enjoy' instead of 'glad to have attended,' and spelling mistakes like 'gitar' instead of 'guitar.' Other phrases like 'vendors played your song lists' are slightly unnatural in this context. While communication is never impeded, these inaccuracies and the somewhat limited range prevent the response from reaching a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures such as 'I'm writing to let you know that...' and 'As I told you, you are my role model.' There are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasing throughout the text, including 'I felt that hope, so I was with you on stage' and 'assist me how to use music instrument.' Punctuation and articles are also occasionally mishandled, such as missing articles before nouns ('use music instrument'). Despite these errors, the meaning is generally clear and your sentences do not cause significant difficulty for the reader, placing the grammar securely in the band 6 range.
