Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mike,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to express howmuch I am impressed with your performance at the concert at YMC stadium last weekend.

I heard so much about your band and you are in this business from last few decades but unfortunately, I haven't had a chance to witness such a incrediable concert. Thus, last week as soon as I heard about your team performing near to town, without having second thought, I booked tickets foo me and my wife.

Your entire team is one of the best in playing musical instruments, but when I heard you singing live, I was amazed, how each word you are singing directly touching to my heart. My playlist is full of your songs, but I never got that feeling, which I got, while you singing live.

I am very fond of playing guitar, I used play in college events but never thought to pursue it as a career, however, from last year I am part of local band in my town and getting a chance to being part of musical group in small events. Since, I am doing so, I realised howmuch I enjoy music. Therefore, anytime you time are looking for gutarist to expand your band size, please consider me to give one chance and I won't disappint you at all

Kind regards,

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response covers all three bullet points required in the prompt. You successfully stated how you felt about Mike's performance, mentioning how each word touched your heart and comparing it to listening to recorded songs. You gave details of your musical activities by explaining your experience playing the guitar in college and currently being part of a local band. Finally, you explained how you would like him to help you by asking him to consider you as a guitarist if he ever expands his band. The tone is appropriate for a semi-formal letter to a singer, and the purpose of the letter is clear throughout. All parts of the task are well-addressed with relevant and supporting ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter is generally clear and easy to follow, with a logical overall progression. You used standard paragraphing to separate your introduction, performance feedback, musical background, and request for help. However, some cohesive devices and transitions feel a bit mechanical or awkward, such as starting a sentence with 'Since, I am doing so' or 'Therefore, anytime you time are looking'. Referencing is mostly clear, but the flow between clauses in longer sentences occasionally stumbles due to punctuation and linking issues. Overall organisation is clear, but finer aspects of cohesion prevent it from reaching a higher band.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common words and phrases such as 'witness such a incrediable concert' and 'expand your band size'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors, such as 'howmuch' (instead of how much), 'incrediable' (incredible), 'foo me' (for me), and 'gutarist' (guitarist). Furthermore, some collocations are slightly unnatural, such as 'getting a chance to being part of'. These errors do not impede communication, but they restrict the lexical score to a Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms throughout the letter. There are several good complex structures attempted, such as 'without having second thought, I booked tickets' and 'when I heard you singing live, I was amazed'. However, grammatical control is inconsistent, with frequent errors including tense and verb form issues ('you are in this business from last few decades', 'I used play', 'while you singing live', 'anytime you time are looking'). Punctuation also needs attention, particularly with comma splices and missing articles. These errors occur frequently enough to impact the overall accuracy of the writing.
