Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Mr. Bieber,
I am writing to express my happiness and gratitute for making my day wholesome. It was my best decision to attend your music show.
I had recently attended your musical concert in toronto and i really enjoyed it. You took me back to my young days where i was to play guitar and sing pop songs. As years passed i have almost stopped playing now due to the financial responsibilities on my shoulder. But after attending this festival i have realized what i am missing in my life and want go back to same old days and start practicing singing and maybe one day i will be able to perform alongside you.
I heard you have opened up music school. I would love to join you and polish my music skills. even if you could give me 4 hours a week it could help to gain the confidence back. Please, consider my request. I hope i will hear back from you soon.
Yours Sincerely,
James

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You successfully cover all three bullet points required in the task. You describe how you feel about the performance, stating that it was your 'best decision' to attend and expressing your happiness. You also provide details of your past musical activities, explaining how you used to play the guitar and sing pop songs before financial responsibilities caused you to stop. Finally, you clearly explain how you would like the singer to help you by letting you join his music school for four hours a week to regain your confidence. The tone is appropriately polite and personal for a General Training letter. All parts of the prompt are addressed well, earning a solid band score for this criterion.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
Your letter is structured with a clear beginning, middle, and end, using appropriate paragraphing to separate your introduction, personal background, and request for help. Ideas follow a logical sequence from describing the concert experience to your past hobbies and finally your current request. However, cohesion at the sentence level is occasionally simple or repetitive, and there are some mechanical transitions like 'As years passed i have almost stopped playing now'. Overall progression is clear, but smoother linking words would enhance the flow of the letter.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully conveying your emotions and experiences with phrases like 'express my happiness and gratitute' and 'financial responsibilities'. There are, however, some spelling and lexical errors, such as 'gratitute' instead of gratitude, omitting capitalization for proper nouns ('toronto'), and awkward phrasing like 'making my day wholesome' instead of making my day. You also attempt some less common items like 'alongside', but overall word choice and spelling inaccuracies keep this within the Band 6 range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional and time clauses ('after attending this festival i have realized what i am missing'). There are several grammatical and punctuation errors throughout the text, including missing capitalization at the beginning of sentences ('i had recently', 'as years passed i'), lowercase 'i' pronouns, and run-on structures like 'even if you could give me 4 hours a week it could help to gain the confidence back'. While these errors do not impede communication, their frequency prevents you from achieving a higher band score.
