Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to you in regards a concert I attended recently where I felt you performed very well.

The concert I am referring to was three weeks ago in London. There were many reasons I enjoyed your performance and I felt very good during and after the show. To me, you sang beautifully and you engaged very well with the audience which I enjoyed mostly.

I am a huge fan of music and always have been. I attend concerts on a regular basis however this was the first time I got to experience your show. Usually, I listen to your music on my phone when I am exercising.

It would mean a lot to me if you could assist me in the future by signing an album I purchase at your show for my wife who is a big fan of yours. Moreover, I would also really appreciate if you could advise me of any musical acts you would recommend who perhaps are similar to yourself.

Kind Regards,

NIall

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt, fulfilling the core requirements of a general training letter. You clearly state how you feel about the performance by mentioning that you 'enjoyed your performance' and felt 'very good during and after the show'. Regarding your musical activities, you mention that you attend concerts regularly and listen to music while exercising. Finally, you explain how you would like help by asking him to sign an album for your wife and recommend similar musical acts. However, while all bullet points are covered, some ideas lean towards under-development. For example, your description of your musical activities is somewhat brief, focusing mostly on listening habits rather than active participation. To reach a higher level, these points could have been extended with more specific details about your musical background or how his music specifically influences your routine.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus: the first introduces the purpose of the letter, the second discusses the concert and your feelings, the third details your musical background, and the final paragraph outlines your requests. You make effective use of cohesive devices to guide the reader smoothly from one idea to the next, such as 'The concert I am referring to', 'Usually', and 'Moreover'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, maintaining a standard letter format with an appropriate greeting and sign-off. The progression of ideas makes the letter easy to follow, and referencing between sentences is generally well managed, contributing to a coherent overall structure.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

Your vocabulary choice provides an adequate range for the task, allowing you to communicate your thoughts clearly. You successfully attempt some less common vocabulary, such as 'on a regular basis' and 'engage very well with the audience'. However, there are minor inaccuracies in word choice and phrasing, such as writing 'in regards a concert' instead of 'in regard to' or 'regarding a concert'. Additionally, phrases like 'enjoyed mostly' could be more naturally phrased as 'mostly enjoyed'. These occasional errors do not impede communication, but to achieve a higher score, you would need to demonstrate a wider range of sophisticated lexical items with greater precision in collocation and style.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

You demonstrate good control of grammar and punctuation, employing a mix of simple and complex sentence forms. There are frequent error-free sentences, such as 'It would mean a lot to me if you could assist me in the future by signing an album'. Complex structures are handled with reasonable success, including conditional clauses and relative clauses like 'who is a big fan of yours'. While a few minor errors persist—such as the missing preposition in 'in regards a concert'—your control over verb tenses and agreement is generally strong. The punctuation is accurate throughout, and sentences are structured well enough that they rarely impede communication, reflecting a solid command of grammatical mechanics.
