Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Mr Smith,
I am writing to tell you how much I enjoyed your performance at the concert last Saturday. Your voice was amazing, and I was especially impressed by the way you sang the final song. You made the whole audience feel excited and emotional.
I am also very interested in music. I have been learning the guitar for three years and usually practise for about an hour every evening. I also sing in my school choir, where I sometimes perform at school events. In the future, I would like to become a better singer and musician.
I would be very grateful if you could give me some advice about improving my singing and guitar skills. If possible, I would also love to attend one of your workshops or have a short lesson with you. Your guidance would mean a lot to me.
Thank you for an unforgettable performance.
Best wishes,
Alex

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0
The response covers all parts of the task very well, ensuring that every bullet point is fully addressed and appropriately extended. You successfully express how you feel about the performance by noting how your voice was amazing and made the audience feel excited and emotional. Furthermore, you provide clear and relevant details of your musical activities, such as learning the guitar for three years and singing in the school choir. Finally, you clearly explain how you would like the singer to help you by asking for advice and suggesting a lesson or workshop. The ideas are well-developed and maintain a fully appropriate tone throughout the letter, reflecting a high level of task fulfillment.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 8.0
Your letter displays a very clear and logical organisation from beginning to end. Ideas are logically sequenced, moving smoothly from the initial praise of the performance to your own musical background, and finally to your request for guidance. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each paragraph dedicated to a distinct aspect of the prompt. Cohesive devices such as 'and', 'also', and 'where' are managed well to connect ideas without feeling mechanical or obtrusive, allowing the reader to follow your message effortlessly throughout the text.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate to sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, making successful attempts at less common and appropriate vocabulary items such as 'unforgettable performance', 'impressed', and 'guidance'. However, to push further into higher bands, you could incorporate more sophisticated collocations and less common lexical items related to music and artistry. The word choice is generally natural and communication is never impeded, though some phrasing remains somewhat standard and straightforward. Spelling and word formation are accurate throughout the entire response.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.5
Your writing shows a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, featuring correct use of subordinate clauses such as 'I am writing to tell you how much I enjoyed your performance' and conditional structures like 'If possible, I would also love to attend...'. There is good control of verb tenses, ranging from the present simple for habits to the present perfect continuous for ongoing musical practice. While there are a few minor slips or simpler constructions, your grammar and punctuation remain solid overall, allowing the reader to comprehend your message with complete ease.
