Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Arijit,
I hope you are doing well. I recently attended your concert at Merit Hall. I was waiting for this one from so long. There were few singers who were a part of this concert, but out of all you were the best one. I am following your singing from my childhood and I am very fond of it. After listening you live, I felt like heaven on the earth. Your voice was so peaceful and sweet that I can keep listening to it. I have never experienced such pleasure event in my whole life till now.
These days, I am also learning some musical instruments and also learning how to sing as well. I am following you as my inspiration by listening to you. I am learning guitar and so far I learnt some musical chords.
I would like you to help me with correcting my singing if I am doing it wrong and also I want you teach me how to play guitar along with singing because right now I am not able to do it together.
Looking forward to hear back from you that what will be the best time to connect.
Best regards,
Priyanka.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
Your letter successfully addresses all three requirements outlined in the prompt. You clearly express your enthusiastic feelings about the performance, stating that it felt like 'heaven on the earth' and that his voice was peaceful and sweet. You also share details of your musical activities, mentioning that you are learning to play the guitar and practice singing. Furthermore, you explain how you would like his help by asking him to correct your singing and teach you how to play the guitar and sing simultaneously. All parts of the task are appropriately covered with a clear, personal tone throughout the letter. To reach a higher level, you could have extended these ideas further by providing more specific context about your musical goals or describing a particular moment from the concert that stood out to you.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
Your letter demonstrates a clear and logical progression of ideas throughout. You begin with a polite greeting and a strong statement about the concert, move naturally into your own musical background in the second paragraph, and conclude with your specific request for guidance, followed by an appropriate sign-off. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate each distinct topic of the letter. You utilise some cohesive devices to connect your thoughts, such as 'These days' and 'so far'. However, the referencing and transitional links are occasionally a bit mechanical, and some sentences rely on basic connectors. To achieve an even higher score, you could employ a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices to link your sentences and paragraphs more smoothly, ensuring that transitions between your feelings, your hobbies, and your requests feel entirely seamless.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for a general task of this nature, successfully communicating your message to the reader. Expressions such as 'attend your concert', 'musical instruments', and 'inspiration' are used appropriately. However, there are notable word choice and collocation inaccuracies throughout the text, such as saying 'waiting for this one from so long' instead of 'for so long', writing 'pleasure event' instead of 'pleasurable event', and using 'correcting my singing' where 'improving my vocal technique' might be more natural. Additionally, there are minor awkward phrasings like 'listening you live' instead of 'listening to you live'. To improve your lexical score, you should focus on expanding your repertoire of less common vocabulary and ensuring your collocations and prepositional phrases closely match natural English usage.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, successfully using structures like relative clauses and subordinate clauses such as 'when you write' or 'if I am doing it wrong'. There are several grammatically correct sentences, and punctuation is generally handled well. Nevertheless, a number of noticeable errors persist throughout the text. For instance, you wrote 'so far I learnt' instead of the present perfect 'so far I have learned', and used awkward phrasing in 'Looking forward to hear back from you that what will be the best time to connect', which contains a redundant conjunction and an incorrect infinitive form. To reach the next level, you need to increase your stock of error-free complex sentences and ensure greater accuracy with verb tenses and infinitive patterns.
