Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mr. Shah,

I am writing express my feelings regarding your last night musical concert held at Mumbai.

Firstly, last night was one of the most memorable concerts in my life. Not only your entry was stunning, but also your voice was soft and heart warming. Plus, I and my friends enjoyed a lot at your concert with the music and your energetic performance.

Regarding my musical journey, I started my career in 2020 with the folk Gujarati songs. Unfortunitely, I failed many a time initally with the rhythm, and now I am not getting enough reach on the social media platform and on YouTube.

I would be incredibly greatful if you could collabrate with me on the social media. Also, can you give me suggestions to improve my content that I post on social media?

I hope you will consider my request favourbly, and I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely,

Anshu Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You successfully addressed all parts of the letter prompt, covering how you feel about the performance, giving details of your musical activities, and explaining how you would like the singer to help you. The tone is appropriate for a semi-formal request to a celebrity artist. Your feelings about the concert are clearly stated, noting the stunning entry and heart-warming voice. Regarding your musical background, you mentioned starting in 2020 with folk Gujarati songs and highlighted your current struggles with rhythm and social media reach. Finally, your request for collaboration and content suggestions is clearly articulated. However, some ideas remain slightly under-developed; for instance, the explanation of your musical activities and struggles could be extended with more specific details to fully reach a higher tier. Overall, your purpose is communicated effectively from start to finish.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

Your letter shows a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, moving smoothly from the opening greeting and praise of the performance to your own musical background, your specific request for help, and the polite sign-off. You use cohesive devices adequately, such as transitional markers like 'Firstly' and 'Regarding my musical journey', which help guide the reader through the text. Referencing is generally clear, and paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct topics. While the cohesive devices work well to structure the letter, occasional mechanical transitions prevent the flow from being entirely seamless or flexible, placing the cohesion firmly at the expected level.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using functional terms such as 'memorable', 'stunning', and 'energetic performance'. You attempt some less common vocabulary, such as 'collabrate' and 'favourbly', but these contain spelling errors ('collaborate', 'favourably') which reflect the limitations at this level. There are also a few lexical inaccuracies, such as writing 'last night musical concert' instead of 'musical concert last night', and 'getting enough reach' rather than engagement or visibility. While these minor errors do not impede communication, they highlight the need for greater precision in word choice, spelling, and collocations to move beyond this band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

Your writing displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over structure. You successfully incorporate relative clauses and compound sentences, such as in your closing remarks and opening statements. However, there are several grammar and punctuation errors present. For instance, there is a missing infinitive particle in 'I am writing express my findings', an unnecessary article in 'the last night musical concert', and a preposition error in 'held at Mumbai' instead of 'in Mumbai'. Additionally, you have spelling mistakes in verb forms like 'Unfortunitely' and 'initally'. These errors persist throughout the response, though they rarely impede communication, allowing the grammar to meet the requirements of this level.
