Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Arjan,

I have clear picture in my mind when you performed last time at "vibgyor fair" in Bathinda, Punjab. I am big fan of your songs, lyrics as well as your voice. whenever, I heared your voice that gives me real peace to my ears, and I forget the whole problems of my life. I feel motivated towards my life, how we should live it with facing consequences. In my free time, I always studied about your life from recent interviews, podcasts especially from your vocal.

In my empty time, I sing songs in front of my friends or close ones to get reviews from them about my singing, lyrics and composition. I also try to write some lyrics as yours, and practicing to increase my vocal clearity, but I do not have any idea to do it as same as yours. I know, I cannot improve it like you, but if I 3/4 of yours, then I will be thankfull to you. please give me some tips and tricks to resolve it.

With regards,

Harpreet Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You successfully cover all parts of the bullet points required in the task, which allows the response to meet the expectations for this band level. You begin by expressing your admiration for the singer's performance at the fair in Bathinda, move on to detail your musical activities such as singing in front of friends and trying to write lyrics, and finally explain how you want him to help you with tips and tricks. However, some ideas remain slightly under-developed or brief, particularly regarding the exact nature of your musical activities and the specific kind of help you are seeking. Expanding further on your creative process would help elevate this section.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

There is a coherent overall arrangement to your letter, and the progression of ideas from your initial praise of the performance to your own musical background and request for guidance is logical. Paragraphing is used to separate your admiration from your personal musical pursuits. Nevertheless, cohesion at times feels mechanical or slightly faulty, such as with transitional expressions like 'In my empty time,' which feels repetitive given you already used 'In my free time' just a sentence prior. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, such as the phrase 'if I 3/4 of yours,' which disrupts the smooth flow of ideas.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, successfully communicating your message about your admiration for the singer and your own musical interests. You attempt less common vocabulary items, such as 'motivation,' 'composition,' and 'podcasts,' but there are noticeable errors in word choice and phrasing, such as 'clear picture in my mind,' 'vocal clearity,' and 'studied about your life.' Additionally, you have minor spelling errors like 'heared' instead of 'heard.' These inaccuracies do not seriously impede communication, but they reflect a limited and developing range of lexical resources.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional structures ('if I 3/4 of yours, then I will be thankfull to you') and relative clauses. However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text. Issues include tense inconsistencies ('whenever, I heared your voice that gives me'), missing prepositions, awkward phrasing ('how we should live it with facing consequences'), and faulty complex structures. While these errors rarely completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to cause some difficulty for the reader and reflect a need for tighter control over basic and complex sentence patterns.
