Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter to thank you for making my first experience to attend a concert wonderful. What made me thrilled was watching you so close to me during the event.

Last night your performance was so incredible that I did not feel any discomfort due to the crowd. I was dancing all the time with my friend throughout your performance. Now you become my favourite singer whom I want to follow all the time.

I am also a singer however, I am not as popular as like you. These days I works as a vocal artist in a theature. I am passionate to become a good singer in the future. I would highly appreciate if you could provide me some tips to improve my skills. I hope you will not disappoint one of your's die heart fans.

looking forward for a positive response.

Yours faithfully,

Simran Kashyap

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You successfully covered all parts of the prompt, satisfying the requirements for the task. You described how thrilled you felt about his performance, detailed your current activities such as working as a vocal artist in a theatre, and explained how you would like him to help by providing tips to improve your skills. The response meets the criteria well by addressing all bullet points clearly. However, to reach a higher level, some ideas could have been further extended and developed with more specific details, such as naming the concert or describing the exact nature of the musical tips you are seeking. Nonetheless, the overall purpose of the letter is clear and fully achieved.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter maintains a clear overall arrangement with logical progression from expressing gratitude to detailing your own musical background and finally asking for assistance. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different themes, such as the event description and the personal request. Cohesive devices are generally used effectively, although referencing is occasionally slightly mechanical, such as the repetitive use of 'your performance'. To move towards a higher band, you could employ a wider range of sophisticated transition phrases and ensure that referencing pronouns are handled more smoothly across sentences, creating a more seamless flow from start to finish.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting some less common expressions such as 'vocal artist', 'passionate', and 'die heart fans'. However, there are some noticeable word choice and collocation errors that prevent a higher score, such as writing 'experience to attend' instead of 'experience of attending', 'as like you' instead of 'like you', and 'die heart' instead of 'die-hard'. Spelling is generally acceptable, but minor inaccuracies in phrasing mean the lexical control remains at a solid intermediate level. Expanding your grasp of natural collocations will help elevate your vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms throughout the letter, demonstrating control over basic structures and attempting more intricate clauses like 'I would highly appreciate if you could provide me some tips'. However, there are some grammar errors present, such as subject-verb agreement ('These days I works' instead of 'work') and minor preposition or article slips like missing the plural marker or using incorrect phrasing in 'one of your's'. These errors do not impede communication and the meaning remains clear, but the frequency of these slips keeps the score at this level. Increasing accuracy in complex structures will improve this score.
