Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear sir,

I hope this letter finds you in radiant health and the best of spirits.I recently went to your concert held on 24th september in Rogers Center where i absolutely loved your work and energy so i am writing this in regard to that.

I am a huge fan of your skills and have been following you on social media since i was a child. Moreover, this time i got a chance to come to one the concerts where everything felt so pure and full of energy. The crowd was so happy and full of enthusiasm.Something i really want to praise about is the perfection and your love towards your work.

Also, I am working on creating my own music which is wholely inspired by you.I like to write lyrics for soft punjabi songs especially for lovers.

It will be highly appreciable you could review my work and give me feedbacks because i can not think of anyone except from the expert.

I hope to hear back from you whenever you get a chance.

Yours faithfully

Drishti

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by explaining how you feel about the singer's performance, giving details of your musical activities, and explaining how you would like him to help you. Your position and purpose are clear throughout. However, some ideas show a tendency to be slightly over-generalised or under-developed, particularly when describing your musical activities and the specific kind of feedback you are hoping to receive. To reach a higher level, you could extend these points by providing more specific examples of your songwriting process or the exact nature of the musical collaboration you are seeking, rather than keeping the details somewhat broad.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

There is a clear logical organisation and progression throughout the letter, with each paragraph addressing a distinct aspect of the prompt. You make effective use of cohesive devices to link your ideas, such as 'Moreover', 'Also', and 'It will be highly appreciable'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate your greeting, praise for the performance, personal musical background, request for help, and sign-off. While the overall arrangement is coherent, referencing and cohesion occasionally feel slightly mechanical, and smoother transitions between sentences would help lift the piece further. Ensuring a seamless flow between your praise of the concert and your own musical aspirations will enhance the natural progression of the text.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task and demonstrates an attempt to incorporate less common items and emotive phrasing, such as 'radiant health', 'enthusiasm', and 'perfection'. You show an awareness of style and collocation, though there are some inaccuracies in word choice, such as using 'wholely' instead of 'wholly', and phrasing like 'give me feedbacks' where 'feedback' is an uncountable noun. Additionally, starting the letter with 'Dear sir' when addressing a specific singer by name is slightly inappropriate. To improve this criterion, focus on refining word forms, ensuring correct spelling, and using precise, natural collocations without minor lexical slips.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and conditional structures. You show good control over basic structures, and the punctuation and grammar rarely impede communication. However, there are some noticeable errors in punctuation, capitalization, and phrasing, such as missing spaces after periods (e.g., 'spirits.I', 'energy. The'), lack of capitalization for proper nouns ('september', 'Rogers Center'), and minor prepositional or structural slips like 'except from the expert'. To achieve a higher level, you should aim for a greater proportion of error-free complex sentences and pay closer attention to capitalization and punctuation rules.
