Student answer (Band 5.5)
Dear Diljit,
Nowadays, you are on your Canada tour. Last week I attended your concert at Rogers stadium in Toronto. You had an amazing performance in that concert and specially I love your attire which you wore that night. Your songs are always energetic and I love your performance so much from that concert night. I learn how to sign professionally. I won many regional competition in my area. I always follow your musical advice related to improve the singing. I would like to connect with you and work with you. Also if you can give me some tips and chance to work with you. I really like to work with your team. If they can collobrate online for a musical video it will boost my moral and helps me to grow more in my singing career.
Hoping for a prompt action for your side regarding this matter!
Yours faithfully,
Jay

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You successfully cover all three required parts of the task. You state how you feel about the singer's performance by mentioning that you had an amazing time at the concert at Rogers stadium and that his songs are always energetic. You also give details of your musical activities, noting that you have won many regional competitions and want to learn how to sing professionally. Finally, you explain how you would like him to help you by asking for tips, a chance to work with your team, and an online collaboration video. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others; for instance, the details of your musical activities are somewhat brief and could have been expanded to provide a clearer picture of your background. To reach the next level, you need to extend and support all your main ideas more thoroughly throughout the letter.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
Your letter has a coherent overall arrangement, and you adopt a standard semi-formal greeting and sign-off. However, the organisation suffers because the text is essentially written as one large block paragraph after the opening line, making the progression of ideas feel a bit mechanical and cramped. While you use some basic cohesive devices like 'Also', referencing and paragraphing are not always handled effectively. To improve, you need to divide your thoughts logically into distinct paragraphs—such as one for the concert reaction, one for your musical background, and one for the request for help—and make better use of a wider variety of cohesive ties to guide the reader smoothly through your message.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for completing the task, attempting some less common phrases such as 'regional competition' and 'collobrate online'. However, there are noticeable lexical and spelling errors that slightly distract the reader, such as the misspelling of 'collobrate' instead of 'collaborate', 'moral' instead of 'morale', and the awkward phrase 'prompt action for your side'. You also rely on basic verbs and repetitions like 'I love your performance so much'. To achieve a higher band, you should expand your range of less common lexical items, ensure greater precision in word choice and collocations, and eliminate spelling mistakes.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as using conditional clauses like 'If they can collobrate online... it will boost my moral'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including tense inconsistencies and awkward phrasing like 'Nowadays, you are on your Canada tour' and 'I learn how to sign professionally' (where 'sing' was likely intended). Punctuation and sentence boundary issues also appear, such as the fragment 'Also if you can give me some tips and chance to work with you.' Fortunately, these errors rarely impede overall communication. To move up, you should aim for a higher proportion of error-free complex sentences and better control over verb forms and prepositions.
