IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You recently went to a concert and thought one of the singers was very good. You want to tell him how you feel. Write a letter to the singer. In your letter
- say how you feel about his performance
- give details of your musical activities
- explain how you would like him to help you with your musical activities
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear .................. ,
Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Rupali,
I hope you are doing well! My name is Anamika.
I am pleased to write that the event you performed at last Saturday was very amazing! I especially liked the song that you sung to create awareness among people how to stay healthy. I am surprised to see how beautifully you played the flute while singing a breathless song.
I am an accountant by profession, but voluntarily, I sing for the Cobequid Foundation to raise money to buy priority medical equipment for the hospital. Recently, in the month of April, they organised a campaign to raise money for Mobile Digital X-ray, and I sang for them.
It would be really appreciated if you could help me in building my confidence to sing in front of thousands of people because the foundation is organizing an event in the month of November. This concert is going to be held at BMO Soccer Club, and the gathering will be two thousand people.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to meeting you and learning how I can perform well in front of a huge audience.
Yours sincerely,
Anamika

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0
The candidate has successfully addressed all three bullet points of the task. Firstly, she expresses her appreciation for the performance by stating, 'the event you performed at last Saturday was very amazing!' and highlighting a specific song. Secondly, she details her musical activities by explaining her voluntary work singing for the Cobequid Foundation to raise money for medical equipment. Finally, she clearly explains how she would like the singer to help her, stating, 'It would be really appreciated if you could help me in building my confidence to sing in front of thousands of people.' All ideas are fully relevant, well-developed, and maintain an appropriate semi-formal tone suitable for a letter to a singer, resulting in a strong task response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5
The letter demonstrates a clear logical organization and progression throughout. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose: the introduction establishes the connection and praises the performance, the second paragraph details the writer's background and musical activities, and the third and fourth paragraphs outline the request for help and concluding remarks. Paragraphing is used appropriately. Cohesive devices are managed well, with smooth transitions such as 'Recently, in the month of April' and 'It would be really appreciated if you could help me'. Referencing and substitution are clear and effective, ensuring the text flows naturally from start to finish.
Lexical Resource: Band 7.0
The writer uses an adequate and sufficiently wide range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating less common items and collocations such as 'priority medical equipment', 'voluntarily', 'profession', and 'huge audience'. Word choice and collocations are generally accurate, although there is a slight awkwardness in phrases like 'a breathless song' instead of 'a fast-paced song' or 'a breathless performance'. Spelling is accurate throughout ('foundation', 'campaign', 'consideration'), and minor lexical inaccuracies do not impede communication, placing the response comfortably within the Band 7 category.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
The response features a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional and subordinate clauses (e.g., 'I am surprised to see how beautifully you played the flute', 'if you could help me in building my confidence'). There is good control of verb tenses and agreement overall. However, there are a few minor grammatical slips, such as 'the song that you sung' instead of 'the song that you sang', and a slight prepositional awkwardness in 'help me in building' rather than 'help me build'. Despite these minor errors, the majority of sentences are error-free, and punctuation is handled well.
