Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear sir,
I hope you find this message well. My name is Himani and I am from Lethbridge,Alberta. I am writing this message to express my feelings about your last concert which was held in Calgary. I was extremely delighted to attend your performance and I can not deny that the view was breadth taking. In addition, your performance was mind blowing especially the dance with your partner on the stage, how romantic.
Moreover, I am fond of singing and I do practice some of the basic activities which I would like to share with you. I usually perform in our university singing competitions. Then regularly, I follow daily routine of practicing different methods for singing vocals.
However, I have never taken any form of tutoring or classis in order to improuve my skills in singing. Thus, I would appreciate if you could provide certaine guide lines and practicies to follow. I am studying musical arts and would like to grow my career with the same industry.
I am eagerly waiting for your next live concert.
Your faithfully,
Himani.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully covers all parts of the prompt, showing that the purpose of the letter is clear. You open by explaining how you feel about the concert, mentioning that you were extremely delighted and praising the view and the dance performance. You also give details of your musical activities, noting that you perform in university singing competitions and practise regularly. Finally, you explain how you would like the singer to help you by asking for guidance and practices. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others; for instance, the request for guidance and the details about your musical activities remain somewhat general rather than being fully extended. To reach a higher level, you would need to provide much fuller, more detailed development of all parts of the task with greater depth and specificity.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
There is a clear logical organisation and progression throughout the letter. The paragraphs follow a natural sequence from greeting and expressing feelings about the concert, to detailing musical activities, and finally to requesting help and closing. You use cohesive devices adequately to connect your ideas, such as 'In addition', 'Moreover', and 'However', although there is a slight mechanical feel to how some transitions are introduced. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct topics. To achieve an even higher band, you could manage cohesion more flexibly and invisibly, ensuring that referencing and transitions flow effortlessly from sentence to sentence without ever seeming repetitive or formulaic.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, providing enough range to communicate your message clearly. You make attempts at less common vocabulary items and phrases, such as 'extremely delighted' and 'musical arts'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors that reflect a Band 6 level, such as writing 'breadth taking' instead of breathtaking, 'classis' instead of classes, 'improuve' instead of improve, 'certaine' instead of certain, 'guide lines' instead of guidelines, and 'practicies' instead of practices. Additionally, the phrase 'grow my career with the same industry' uses an inappropriate preposition. These lexical slips and spelling inaccuracies prevent the response from reaching higher bands, where greater precision and natural collocation are required.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like relative clauses and conditional-style requests ('I would appreciate if you could...'). There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, but they rarely impede communication. Examples of grammatical and punctuation issues include the opening salutation 'Dear sir,' and closing 'Your faithfully,' which contain capitalization and form inaccuracies, as well as the fragment 'how romantic.' and the slight awkwardness in 'I hope you find this message well'. Your control of verb tenses is generally clear, and basic structures are handled well. To move further up, you would need to display a wider variety of complex structures with frequent error-free sentences and tighter control over punctuation and agreement.
