Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Diljit Dosanjh,
I am writing this letter to express my feelings about your performance at a concert that I recently attended in Halifax. I felt quite blessed and delighted to attend your live performance. From the very beginning, the way you interacted with the audience was quite impressive as everybody was singing and enjoying throughout the performance. Moreover, your outfit represented your culture and background which was another highlight for me because it must have inspired the youth to stay connected to their roots.
During my leisure time, I like to play guitar and sing songs. I am passionate about starting my career in music industry because I love writing and singing songs.
As you are my role model, I want to request you to help me with my musical activities because if I learn from such an amazing artist, I am confident that I can improve my skills and gain more knowledge about music.
Looking forward to hearing from you soon.
Kind regards,
Jashanpreet Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three requested points: you praise the concert, describe your own musical interests, and ask the singer to support your development. The reaction is made specific through details such as the audience singing and the singer’s outfit, while your guitar playing and songwriting explain your connection to music. The request for help, however, remains broad: “help me with my musical activities” does not say whether you hope for advice, a lesson, or feedback on your songs. Developing that request with a practical example would make the ideas more fully supported. The tone is consistently appreciative and appropriate for writing to an admired performer.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5
The letter is clearly organised into an opening about the concert, a paragraph on your musical activities, and a final request, followed by a suitable closing. This gives the reader a logical progression through the task. Linking expressions such as “Moreover” and “As you are my role model” help connect the ideas, and the references to the performance remain easy to follow. To make the flow more polished, connect your musical interests more directly to the kind of help you are seeking; the shift from describing your activities to the general request is somewhat abrupt. Overall, paragraphing and sequencing are effective, with only a small opportunity to make the links between points more natural.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use a suitable range of vocabulary to express admiration and musical ambition, including “delighted,” “impressive,” “passionate,” and “role model.” The wording is generally clear and appropriate to a personal letter. Some phrases are less natural or precise, however: “felt quite blessed” is an unusual way to describe attending a concert, and “starting my career in music industry” would be more idiomatic with an article and a more precise expression. “Help me with my musical activities” is also broad and repetitive rather than specific. More natural collocations and precise terms for the support you want would show greater flexibility and control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
The letter includes a useful mix of simple and complex sentences, and several are controlled well, such as “From the very beginning, the way you interacted with the audience was quite impressive” and the sentence explaining how learning from the singer could improve your skills. Most sentence meanings are clear. A few grammatical issues remain: “in music industry” needs an article (“in the music industry”), and “I want to request you to help me” is not a well-formed request pattern; “I would like to ask you to help me” is more accurate. The sentence beginning “because if I learn” also combines its reasons awkwardly. Revising these patterns would strengthen accuracy while retaining the range of structures.
