Dear .................. ,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Zayn,
I hope you are doing well. My name is Anush and I have been listening to your music for the past 5 years now. I recently attended your concert which was held on 9th Jan, at Moin Khan Academy.
From the moment concert started till the end, your energy and the way you interacted with all the fans was such an overwhelming and a happy experience. I am writing this letter to ask you about the guidance regarding a musical instrument i.e Piano, that I recently purchased and I'm not sure how to play it properly.
I am practicing it to play at the wedding alter of my bestfriend. She specfically asked me to perform "Canon" which is a very difficult piece to play. I was hoping if you can just give me some tips on how to improve. I am attaching the file below of me practising it. I will be waiting for your feedback. Kindly go over it.
Regards,
Anush

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three points: you praise the concert, describe your piano practice, and ask Zayn for advice. The response is relevant and the request is clear, especially when you explain that you are preparing “Canon” for your best friend’s wedding. The performance praise is engaging, but it could be more specific—for example, mention a particular song or moment that impressed you. Your musical activities are also described quite narrowly: you say you recently bought a piano and are practising one piece, but give little information about your experience, routine, or other musical involvement. The request for help is understandable, though explaining what kind of guidance you need would make this part more fully developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter follows a clear progression: you introduce yourself and the concert, describe your reaction, then explain your piano practice and request feedback. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and links such as “I recently attended” and “I was hoping” help the reader follow your purpose. The closing is appropriate for a personal letter. Some connections could be smoother: the shift from praising the performance to asking for piano guidance is abrupt, and “I am attaching the file below” is not clearly connected to the request. A brief transition explaining why you are approaching this singer for advice would strengthen the flow. Overall, the organisation is clear, with some room for more flexible linking.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range for the topic, including “interacted,” “overwhelming,” “guidance,” and “perform,” and your meaning remains clear. There are attempts at more expressive language, such as describing the concert as “a happy experience,” but some choices are awkward or imprecise. “Wedding alter” appears to mean “wedding altar,” while “perform at the wedding alter” is not the most natural collocation; “play at my best friend’s wedding” would be clearer. “Ask you about the guidance” and “go over it” are also less natural in this context. Spelling slips such as “specfically” and “bestfriend” show that accuracy needs attention. More precise, natural phrasing would improve the letter’s fluency.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, and most ideas are easy to understand. For example, “I recently attended your concert which was held on 9th Jan” and “I was hoping if you can just give me some tips” show attempts to combine information and make a polite request. Some grammatical errors remain: “from the moment concert started” needs an article (“the concert”), and “I was hoping if you can” would be more accurate as “I was hoping you could.” The phrase “such an overwhelming and a happy experience” also has an unnecessary second article. Review articles and polite request structures, and check punctuation around longer sentences. These issues do not prevent communication.
