Student answer (Band 5.5)

Dear Diljit

I am feeling absolutely delighted and cheris by your performance at The Scotian Bank Arena held on last Friday.

To commence, Your singing performance was marvelous, on top of that, The dance moves that you showed to the viewers were fantastic and they acted as energy booster for us. Specially, your song, Baby Doll is my all time favourite and the way you delivered in front of the audience was brilliant.

Not only this, Your knowledge of musical instruments also deserves an appreciation, for instance, guitar and harmonium. I am writing this letter with great hope and requesting you to help me in learning music and other imperative musical instruments beacuse I want to be a professional singer but I dont have enough money to joing singing clases, therefore, I am requesting you to help me, the reason of that is, you are a artist and only you can understand my pain and sufferings. Thanks for your time and consideration.

I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Thanks and regards,

Tarspreet

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You address the three requested points: you praise the singer’s performance, mention your interest in learning music and instruments, and ask for help. Specific details such as the arena, the dance moves and “Baby Doll” make the praise relevant. However, the musical activities you currently do are not clearly described; the letter mainly says you want to learn. The request for help is also broad, and the explanation focuses on your lack of money and personal hardship rather than specifying what support you hope to receive. Develop these points with details about your current practice or experience and a clear request, such as lessons, advice, or an opportunity to perform together.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a generally clear sequence: you begin with your reaction, add examples of what impressed you, then explain your request and close politely. Paragraphing helps distinguish the praise from the request, and phrases such as “for instance” and “I am looking forward to hearing from you” guide the reader. This coherent overall arrangement is a strength. Some links, however, feel mechanical or unclear: “Not only this” does not connect smoothly to the previous point, while “the reason of that is” makes the request harder to follow. The long sentence beginning “I am writing this letter” combines several ideas. Use simpler transitions and separate the reason for your request from the specific help you want.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a range of positive and task-related vocabulary, including “marvelous,” “fantastic,” “energy booster,” and “professional singer.” These choices communicate enthusiasm, and references to “guitar and harmonium” add relevant specificity. However, several word choices, collocations, and spelling errors reduce naturalness: “cheris,” “held on last Friday,” “imperative musical instruments,” and “joing singing clases” are difficult or awkward. “Knowledge of musical instruments” also does not clearly express what you admire about his playing. Aim for accurate, natural phrases such as “I was delighted by your performance,” “learn to play instruments,” and “singing lessons.” Check spelling carefully and prefer precise wording over formal-sounding expressions that do not fit the context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple sentences and longer structures, including “Specially, your song… and the way you delivered…” and a sentence explaining your goal and financial situation. This shows some range, but the longer constructions are not consistently controlled, and errors sometimes make relationships between ideas unclear. For example, “I am writing this letter with great hope and requesting you to help me” has an awkward structure, while “the reason of that is” does not form a clear grammatical link. Capitalisation is also inconsistent after commas, as in “on top of that, The dance moves.” Work on building one clear clause at a time, using accurate verb patterns such as “I am writing to ask you to help me,” and check articles, punctuation, and sentence boundaries.
