Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Saman,

My name is Aakansha Chauhan, and I am writing this letter to appreciate your singing. I really had an exceptional experince at the concert. Especially, when you were presenting your part. You really have a magical voice and an innate talent.

I have been taking lessons for the classical singing for the past 6 years. I am one of the participants in the upcoming singing competition at my college. It will be held on 18th of May. I wanted to request you if you could help me to prepare for the competition. Moreover, I am good at vocals but I am not confident enough to represent myself, specially infront of crowd. I have seen your journey from singing at small events to becoming a successfull well-known singer.

As you are my inspiration since the begining. Therefore, Taking guidance from you will not only motivate me but will also help me to enhance my future perfomances.

I am looking forward to receiving a positive response from your side.

Warm Regards,

Aakansha

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

You address all three points clearly: you praise the singer’s performance (“a magical voice”), describe your six years of classical singing lessons and upcoming college competition, and ask for help preparing. The request is relevant and your admiration for his career gives it a personal context. To make the ideas more fully developed, specify what kind of guidance you hope to receive—for example, vocal coaching, advice on stage confidence, or a practice session before 18 May. The letter’s purpose and tone are clear throughout, but this added detail would make the request more precise and the supporting ideas more fully extended.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter follows a clear progression: you introduce your reason for writing, explain your musical background and request, then close politely. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and linking expressions such as “Moreover” and “As” show an effort to connect ideas. Some connections are less smooth, however. “As you are my inspiration since the begining. Therefore” separates a dependent clause from its result and makes the transition feel mechanical. Join the ideas into one sentence and use a more natural link. The sentence beginning “Especially” is also a fragment, interrupting the opening paragraph’s flow. More consistently integrated transitions would strengthen the otherwise logical organisation.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a suitable range of vocabulary for a personal letter, including “exceptional,” “innate talent,” “classical singing,” and “guidance.” These choices communicate admiration and your musical interests, and the meaning remains clear. There are, however, several spelling errors, including “experince,” “successfull,” “begining,” and “perfomances,” which reduce accuracy. A few expressions are also less natural or precise: “presenting your part” could be replaced with a more idiomatic description of performing, while “from your side” is an awkward way to refer to a reply. Aim to retain the expressive vocabulary while checking spelling and choosing more natural collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex structures, such as “I have been taking lessons … for the past 6 years” and “Taking guidance from you will not only motivate me but will also help me…”. These forms communicate your meaning, and the letter is generally easy to follow. Some errors remain in sentence construction and punctuation. “Especially, when you were presenting your part” is a fragment; attach it to the preceding sentence. “As you are my inspiration since the begining. Therefore…” is also incomplete and uses an awkward sentence break. In addition, “I wanted to request you if” needs a different grammatical pattern, such as “I would like to ask whether you could…”. More accurate clause construction would improve control.
