Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Anuv,
I hope you're good. I am writing this letter to express my happiness and excitement about your concert in London.
Firstly, I am congratulating you about your effort and dedication that you have given to that concert. Your performance was astonishing and cheerfull. Additionally, your skills in playing guitar along with vocals are mind-blowing and I found myself intears while you sang 'Arz Kiya Hei'.
I used to play ukulele; however, now recently struggled to find enough time to practise. Even though I try to sing songs during get-togethers etc.
Neverthless, I got inspired from your singing and would like to improve my musical activities. Could you please give me any advice for developing skills in chords progressions and strumming patterns? I would also appreciate if you could recommend some practice techniques on singing along with instruments.
Thankyou so much for your time for reading this letter. Best wishes for your future programmes.
Kind regards,
Carol George

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address all three points clearly: you praise the concert, describe your musical background, and ask for specific help. The reaction to the performance is supported with details such as the guitar and vocals and the song “Arz Kiya Hei.” You also explain that you play the ukulele and sing at get-togethers, then request advice on chord progressions, strumming, and practising singing with an instrument. These details make the letter relevant and purposeful. To develop the ideas further, explain briefly what you currently find difficult or what you hope to achieve through practice. The request is already clear, but a little more personal context would make the support you seek feel more fully grounded.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter follows a clear progression: you introduce your reason for writing, describe the concert, move to your own musical activities, and finish with requests and a polite closing. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and transitions such as “Additionally,” “however,” and “Even though” guide the reader through the ideas. The sequence is easy to follow throughout. Some linking is slightly mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “Firstly” and “Additionally,” and “Even though” introduces a fragment rather than a complete contrast. For a more natural flow, connect related ideas within complete sentences and use transitions only where they clarify the relationship between points.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a personal letter, including expressive choices such as “astonishing,” “dedication,” and “mind-blowing,” as well as relevant musical terms like “strumming patterns” and “chord progressions.” These help convey enthusiasm and make your request specific. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or less natural, however: “congratulating you about your effort” does not express praise idiomatically, and “inspired from your singing” is not the usual phrasing. There are also spelling or form slips, including “cheerfull,” “Neverthless,” and “Thankyou.” Check spelling carefully and learn common word partnerships so your vocabulary sounds more precise and natural.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You attempt a mix of simple and more complex structures, including “Even though I try to sing songs during get-togethers” and the contrast introduced by “however.” Most of the message remains understandable, and the requests are formed clearly. Some grammatical errors remain. “Even though I try to sing songs during get-togethers etc.” is an incomplete dependent clause; join it to a main clause or rewrite it as a complete sentence. “I used to play ukulele; however, now recently struggled” also lacks a clear subject and has an awkward tense construction. In addition, “I would also appreciate if” needs “it” after “appreciate.” Review complete sentence structure and verb forms, while continuing to use varied sentence patterns.
