IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You recently went to a concert and thought one of the singers was very good. You want to tell him how you feel. Write a letter to the singer. In your letter
- say how you feel about his performance
- give details of your musical activities
- explain how you would like him to help you with your musical activities
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear .................. ,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Singer,
I was in your concert at Dubai Opera and honestly those two hours of the concert were one of the best hours I have spent so far in any concert.
You're fabolous! Your energy, the song choices and the best part, engaging the audience throughout your time. I would love to attend your concert again.
I seriously enjoyed the part when you asked the audience to sing along with you. I was in the front rows and I don't remember if I had sat down for a second. We all were dancing and ejoying. Really a lovely evening.
I am also a singer by profession, but a very modest one with not a big fan base yet. I perform on a very small scale, mainly at the office gatherings, weddings and other celebrations.
My aim is to become a singer like you and I was hoping if you can help me achieving that. My biggest fear which I want to overcome is the "stage fright". Can you please help me how to overcome that? At small scale performances, I perform better. But it always frightening to imagine if the scale gets big. Really looking forward to your professional advice.
Thanks,
Your biggest fan.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three points: you praise the concert, describe your singing work at office gatherings, weddings and celebrations, and ask for help with stage fright. The enthusiasm is clear in details such as being in the front rows and singing along. Your request is relevant, but the explanation of how the singer could help is less developed: you ask for advice on overcoming fear without suggesting a specific form of support, such as a short coaching session or practical exercises. The description of your musical activities is also brief. This covers the task well overall, while fuller development of these points and a more suitable opening than “Dear Singer” would make the letter more complete and purposeful.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter has a clear overall sequence: concert experience, your own musical background, then your request for help. Separate paragraphs make these shifts easy to follow, and phrases such as “I am also” and “My aim” signal the move to a new topic. However, some links are abrupt, and the short fragments “Really a lovely evening” and “Really looking forward to your professional advice” interrupt the flow. The final line, “How he can help,” appears disconnected from the letter and should be removed or integrated. Use a more conventional closing and connect the request more smoothly to your description of performing; this would make the organisation feel less uneven.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a range of relevant vocabulary to convey enthusiasm and musical experience, including “engaging the audience,” “fan base,” “stage fright” and “professional advice.” These choices make your meaning clear, but several spelling and word-choice errors reduce accuracy: “fabolous” and “ejoying” are misspelled, while “I was in your concert” is an unnatural expression. Informal wording such as “You’re fabulous!” and “not a big fan base” is understandable but not consistently suited to a respectful letter to a professional singer. Aim for more precise collocations and a slightly more polished register, for example, “I attended your concert” and “a modest following.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use both simple sentences and some longer structures, including “I was hoping if you can help me achieving that,” and the main message remains understandable. However, some grammatical patterns are inaccurate, particularly in the request: “I was hoping if you can help me achieving that” needs a different construction, such as “I was hoping you could help me achieve that.” The question “Can you please help me how to overcome that?” also combines structures incorrectly; use “Could you please advise me on how to overcome it?” There are sentence fragments, including “Really a lovely evening,” and “the best part” is left without a complete clause. More consistent control of clauses and complete sentences would improve accuracy.
