Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir,
I attended your concert last weekend and I thought the performance was great because I was entertained all through your performance. I felt it was exceptional the way you played the drum with the band while also expressing your talent and skills during the solo performance.
I have played the drum since I was 5 years old. I have had the opportunity to play with multiple groups since then as their lead drummer. I have also been a part of multiple musical competitions to show case my drumming skills. The last competition which I participated in was he national drumming competition where I won the best drummer representing Nigeria.
I have been watching your lesson videos to improve my skills, starting from the beginner level to the advanced level modules. Although, these classes have developed my hand eye cordination, I am yet to develop my ability to play the drum at the pace which you do. I would like your help increasing my drumming pace when playing to fast beats.
I appreacite your support and looking forward to hearing from you.
Yours faithfully,
Gideon Njoku

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The letter clearly addresses all three points: you praise the performance, describe your drumming background, and ask for help improving your speed. The compliment is supported with a specific detail about the drum solo, while your experience is strengthened by mentioning group performances and winning a national competition. Your request is also clear: you want to play faster beats at the singer’s pace. These relevant details and the consistently positive purpose make the response well developed. To make the ideas even more fully developed, explain what kind of help you hope to receive—for example, private lessons, feedback on a recording, or advice on practice routines. The formal greeting and sign-off are appropriate, though addressing the singer by name would make the letter more personal.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter has a clear progression: it begins with your reaction to the concert, moves to your musical experience, and then explains the help you are seeking. Separate paragraphs make these stages easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “since then,” “Although,” and “I would like” help connect the information. The sequence within the experience paragraph is also logical, moving from childhood practice to group work and competition. Some connections could be smoother: “Although” introduces a contrast, but the relationship between the lessons’ benefits and your remaining difficulty could be made more explicit. The closing sentence also moves abruptly from appreciation to looking forward to a reply. A more complete closing transition would make the progression feel more polished.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the letter, including relevant musical terms such as “lead drummer,” “solo performance,” “drumming skills,” and “fast beats.” Phrases such as “exceptional” and “improve my skills” communicate your enthusiasm and purpose clearly. There are, however, some spelling errors, including “show case,” “cordination,” and “appreacite,” and a few expressions are not quite natural: “play the drum at the pace which you do” and “increasing my drumming pace” could be phrased more idiomatically. “Multiple” is also repeated. These issues do not prevent understanding, but more accurate spelling, varied wording, and natural collocations would make your vocabulary more precise and fluent.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the contrast clause beginning “Although” and the time clause “since I was 5 years old.” Most of the message remains clear, and the past-tense account of the concert and competition is generally controlled. Some grammatical errors remain. In “Although, these classes have developed…,” the comma after “Although” is unnecessary; the clause should connect directly to the main clause. “The last competition which I participated in was he national…” also contains an incorrect article, and “I appreciate your support and looking forward…” shifts into an incomplete construction; use “I appreciate your support and look forward to hearing from you.” More consistent control of clauses and complete sentence structures would strengthen accuracy.
