Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Richard,
Attending your live perfomance show last weekend was one of the best event in my life. It has been four years since I relocated to the United Kingdom, without visiting home. I would like to appreciate your music which has brought back memories and sense of connectivity from home. Your music made me relax and forgot all the stress that I had in this country.
Your type of music gave me a reason to keep on working hard until I achieve what I want. I love listening to the old school because it teaches lots of things about the past. I am intererested in engaging with you in music. I am conducting some workshops in the coming months and as someone who loves music, I would love you to offer great music as you did. I love people to learn one or two through your music.
I would love to engage with you sometime so that you assist me in my music activities. I need help with correcting my words and fine tune my perfomance.
Your assistance will be greatly appreciated.
Kind regards
Ruth Nhundu

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address all three points: you describe the concert’s emotional effect, mention your interest in old-school music and upcoming workshops, and ask for help correcting your words and refining your performance. The personal detail about being away from home makes your praise meaningful. However, the musical activities are not fully explained: it is unclear what kind of workshops you conduct, who attends them, or what role music plays in them. The request for help is also broad; specify whether you want feedback on lyrics, coaching, or a joint workshop. Developing these details would make the purpose of the letter clearer and more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter has a clear overall arrangement: it begins with your reaction to the concert, moves to your musical interests and workshops, and ends with a request and polite closing. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and phrases such as “I would love” connect your interests to your request. Some links between ideas are less clear, however. For example, “I am interested in engaging with you in music” is followed by the workshop information without explaining how the two are connected. The request for assistance is also repeated in the final body paragraph. Use clearer transitions and combine repeated points so that each paragraph advances the letter naturally.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary to express personal feelings and musical interests, including “memories,” “connectivity,” “old school,” and “fine tune my performance.” These choices make the letter’s purpose understandable, and the emotional language gives it a personal tone. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “live performance show,” “one of the best event,” and “offer great music.” There are also spelling errors in “perfomance” and “intererested.” Choose more natural expressions for praising a concert and describing the singer’s contribution, and proofread spelling carefully. More precise vocabulary for your workshops and the help you need would also strengthen the letter.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple sentences and more developed structures, including “It has been four years since I relocated to the United Kingdom” and the relative clause “which has brought back memories.” Most of the message remains clear despite some grammatical errors. For example, “one of the best event” needs plural agreement (“events”), while “made me relax and forgot” should keep the verb forms parallel (“relax and forget”). In “help with correcting my words and fine tune my performance,” the forms should also be parallel (“correcting … and fine-tuning …”). Review agreement and verb patterns, and check punctuation and spacing, such as the extra space before “from home.”
