IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You recently went to a concert and thought one of the singers was very good. You want to tell him how you feel. Write a letter to the singer. In your letter

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear .................. ,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to you to provide my feedback for the recent bollywood concert in Sudbury.

To start with, the concert at our college on the last Saturday in Sudbury was blockbluster, all the students had outstanding time there. Although other singers were good, your performance was extremely great. Especially your vocals and the band for the romentic song you sang alone towards the end was biggest highlight of the concert.

I would like to let you know that I am also a struggling singler. It was my mother's vision to see me as a singer on a big stage like you. Even though I am not that good at the moment, I do 10 hours of rehersal everyday. I prefer to sing jazz, classic and a bit of rap music.

I would appriciate it if you could give me chance to meet you personally just for a few minutes to ask you about what you do to keep your vocals and singing organised. Consequently, I can try to implement those mentioned things in my life so I can be as popular singer as you.

Your faithfully,

Krishna Yogi

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three points: you describe the concert positively, explain your own singing practice and musical interests, and ask to meet the singer for advice. Details such as rehearsing for ten hours a day and enjoying jazz, classical music and rap make your background relevant. The request for help is clear, but it focuses mainly on a brief personal meeting and advice about vocal care; explaining more specifically what guidance or support you hope to receive would develop this point further. The opening and closing are appropriate in form, though “Dear Sir” is less personal than addressing the singer by name. Overall, the purpose is clear and the ideas are relevant, with some parts more fully developed than others.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall arrangement: it opens with the reason for writing, then discusses the concert, your musical activities and your request. Paragraphing helps the reader follow these distinct points, and phrases such as “To start with” and “Even though” signal relationships between ideas. Some linking is a little mechanical, however, and “Consequently” does not express the relationship as naturally as a direct explanation of how the singer’s advice would help you. The concert paragraph also moves quickly from the event to the performance details. Use a wider range of natural transitions and make the links between your request and your goals more explicit to create smoother progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of vocabulary for the topic, including “vocals,” “rehearsal,” “jazz” and “rap,” and the reader can understand your enthusiasm. There are, however, several noticeable spelling errors, including “blockbluster,” “romentic,” “singler,” “rehersal” and “appriciate.” Some word combinations are also unnatural: “provide my feedback for” and “extremely great” are less idiomatic choices, while “classic” should be “classical” when describing a music genre. These issues keep the vocabulary from sounding consistently controlled, even though they do not prevent the main message from coming across. Check spelling carefully and learn common collocations for praise and musical practice.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the concession in “Although other singers were good” and the conditional request “I would appreciate it if you could…”. Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors are present. For example, “all the students had outstanding time” needs an article, and “was biggest highlight” also needs “the.” In “I can be as popular singer as you,” the comparison requires an article before “popular singer.” The sentence beginning “Especially your vocals…” is also a fragment rather than a complete sentence. Aim to make each sentence complete and check articles and comparison structures; this will improve accuracy while preserving your attempts at varied sentences.
