Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to express my appreciation for your performance. Firstly, I want to tell you that your voice is amazing and melodious. As you sang with great confidence and emotion. Moreover, whole audience enjoyed your performance. Also, you know that I have loved music since childhood and enjoy singing in my spare time. I practice singing for 30 minutes every day but still I want to improve my voice and singing techniques. I sometimes sing at family gatherings and local events as well.

Can you please help me by giving some advice on how to improve singing and recommend vocal exercises. I would really be thankful if you share some tips on controlling my voice and breathing and suggest me a good music teacher.

If possible, kindly give me an opportunity to attend one of your workshops. I look forward to haering from you.

Thank you

Simran

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three requirements: you praise the singer’s performance, describe your own musical activities, and ask for help. Details such as practising daily, singing at family gatherings and local events, and wanting advice on breathing make the request relevant and personal. Your appreciation is clear from the opening, and the request for a workshop adds a specific way the singer could support you. To strengthen the response further, develop the musical background and the kind of help you need a little more—for example, explain what you find difficult when singing or what you hope to learn at a workshop. This would extend the ideas rather than leaving some requests as a list of suggestions.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The ideas follow a sensible order: you begin with praise, move to your own musical experience, and then make requests. Linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “Also,” and “If possible” help signal these stages, and the reader can follow the purpose throughout. However, the letter is presented as one continuous paragraph, so the shifts between appreciation, background, and requests are less clearly marked than they could be. Some connectors also feel mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “Also.” Use separate paragraphs for the three main purposes and vary the transitions or connect ideas more directly. This would preserve the clear overall progression while making the organisation and cohesion more flexible.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a personal letter, including relevant musical terms such as “singing techniques,” “vocal exercises,” “controlling my voice,” and “breathing.” Words such as “appreciation,” “confidence,” and “emotion” also help convey your response to the concert. Some choices are less natural or precise: “melodious” is an awkward description of a voice in this context, and “suggest me a good music teacher” uses an unsuitable collocation. There is also a spelling error in “haering.” These slips do not prevent understanding, but checking collocations and spelling would make the language more accurate and natural. Aim for precise phrases rather than adding formal-sounding words where a simpler expression fits better.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The letter includes both simple statements and attempts at more complex structures, such as “I would really be thankful if you share some tips” and “If possible, kindly give me an opportunity to attend one of your workshops.” Most of the message remains easy to understand, and the requests are generally formed clearly. Some grammatical errors remain. “As you sang with great confidence and emotion” is a dependent clause presented as a sentence; it should be joined to the preceding sentence. In “I would really be thankful if you share,” the conditional pattern needs a more suitable verb form, such as “if you shared.” There are also missing articles in “whole audience” and “suggest me a good music teacher.” Review sentence boundaries, articles, and conditional structures to improve accuracy.
