Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Joe Brown,
Iam writing this to inform you of the concert at Lagos you had at stadim. I have been a fan of yours for ten years and this is my first show which was spectacular. I felt so elated after the performance, your voice has always been soothing just like that of nightingale.
I feel connected with you because we are both soprano singers and your random classes i have enrolled in gave me chance to know how to control my voice. I am a chorister at my church and i have auditioned in different voice talent show where i came second.
I saw a flyer of opportnity for coaching and I would be grateful if you could offer me a slot.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely,
Julian agbarano.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address all three points: you praise the performance (“so elated”), describe your church choir and talent-show experience, and ask for a coaching opportunity. The letter is relevant and its purpose is clear. However, some details are under-developed: for example, you mention coming second in a talent show but give no context about your repertoire or current goals, and “offer me a slot” does not explain what kind of help or coaching you hope to receive. The response also contains 135 words, so it does not meet the required minimum of 150. Add specific details about your musical activities and explain how the singer’s guidance could help you progress.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall arrangement: you begin with your reaction to the concert, move to your own musical background, and finish with your request and a polite closing. The paragraph breaks support this progression, and links such as “because” and “and” help connect related information. To make the organisation more fully controlled, develop the request in its own paragraph and connect it more explicitly to your experience—for instance, explain what you learned from the classes and what you would like to work on next. The opening sentence is also somewhat difficult to follow because it combines the purpose of writing with the concert details. Overall, the sequence is coherent, though some connections could be clearer and less abrupt.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a personal letter, including expressive choices such as “spectacular,” “elated,” “soothing,” and “soprano singers.” These help convey enthusiasm and establish your musical background. There are also some inaccurate or awkward choices that reduce naturalness: “the concert at Lagos you had at stadim” is unclear, “random classes” does not clearly describe the lessons, and “a slot” is vague in this context. Spelling and word-form slips such as “opportnity” and “stadim” are noticeable, although the reader can generally understand your meaning. Choose more precise phrases for the venue, lessons, and coaching request, and check spelling before submitting.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use a mixture of simple sentences and some more developed structures, such as “I feel connected with you because we are both soprano singers” and “I would be grateful if you could offer me a slot.” The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical and punctuation errors are present. For example, “Iam” needs a space, and the opening sentence (“I am writing this to inform you of the concert at Lagos you had at stadim”) has an unclear structure. The sentence joining “I felt so elated” and “your voice has always been soothing” needs a full stop or a suitable conjunction. Capitalisation of “I” is inconsistent, and the final name should be capitalised consistently. Aim for clearer sentence boundaries and proofread basic forms.
