Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Rex,
I am writing to impress my absolute admiration for your incredible performance at the concert in Chicago last weekend.Especially your vocal range and emotional delivery left me deeply moved.I loved the way you used flute at the end,it was the starshow which was speechless. It was truely an unforgettable experience.
Meeting and greeting an artist of your caliber is particularly inspiring to me because I am a guitarist as well, from the past three years I am practicing daily and do small recordings of what I do ,and sometimes I try to sing in night concerts as well as a back stage media, but I am not that confidant with my singing skills .
I would really appreciate if you can guide me by listening to the recordings I have made or if you can give me 20 minutes on google meet to listen to my voice and guitar so that you can give me your insight and guide me to do better.
I would really appreciate your effort.
Yours sincerely,

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address all three points clearly: you praise the performance, describe your guitar practice and recording, and ask for feedback or a short online meeting. Specific details such as “your vocal range and emotional delivery” and practising daily for three years make the letter personal and relevant. Your request is understandable and polite. To make the response more fully developed, explain a little more about the kind of music you play or what you hope to improve, and make the proposed help feel less demanding by acknowledging that the singer may be busy. The purpose and tone remain clear throughout, while some details about your musical activities could be extended.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter follows a clear progression: appreciation of the concert, information about your own musical activities, and a request for guidance. Separate paragraphs help the reader follow these stages, and linking expressions such as “because” and “so that” show how your ideas relate. The closing is also appropriate for a personal letter. Some sentences, particularly the long sentence beginning “Meeting and greeting an artist,” contain several ideas joined together, which makes the progression within the paragraph less smooth. Improve this by dividing the information about practice, recordings, and singing into shorter sentences, and use punctuation consistently to make the transitions easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a suitable range of vocabulary to express admiration and discuss music, including “vocal range,” “emotional delivery,” “recordings,” and “guide me.” These choices make the purpose clear, and some phrases convey genuine enthusiasm. However, several word choices or combinations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “impress my absolute admiration,” “the starshow which was speechless,” and “back stage media.” There are also spelling errors in “truely” and “confidant.” These do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and naturalness. Choose familiar, accurate collocations where needed, and check spelling carefully; this will make your musical description sound more fluent and appropriate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mixture of sentence forms, including a reason clause (“because I am a guitarist”) and a purpose clause (“so that you can give me your insight”). The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “from the past three years I am practicing” needs a more suitable time expression and verb form, while “I would really appreciate if you can guide me” has an inconsistent conditional structure. The long sentence about your activities also needs clearer sentence boundaries, and punctuation is missing after “weekend” and in other places. Practise accurate present-perfect forms for continuing activities and use consistent conditional phrasing in polite requests.
