Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Shubh,
I am writing this letter to express my feelings about your recent concern in hamilton city which is held last weekend on sunday. I had enjoyed every second of your show and you performed with high energy and your entry on the stage was exceptionally brilliant. Your musical instruments team and background artists also perform so much good with your voise.
I have also keen interest in music since childhood and I also played piano and drum with singing in local community events.
I will request you if you could help me to improve my musical skills through your experience by giving my advice how i improve my composition and vocal pitch with my instruments and it would be great if you could allow me to join your team as vollunteer, which will boost my confidence and get opportunity to learn these skills practically.
I hope you will comsider my request and helping me to learn these skills.
Looking forward to hearing from you soon regarding this matter.
Yours sincerly,
Maninder

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address all three points in the task: you praise the singer’s performance, describe your own musical activities, and ask for help. Details such as enjoying the show, playing piano and drums, and wanting advice on composition and vocal pitch make the letter relevant and personal. Your request to join the singer’s team as a volunteer also gives a clear, practical way he could support you. To make the response more fully developed, explain one specific aspect of the performance that impressed you or give a little more detail about your community performances. The purpose and tone are clear throughout, with an appropriate greeting and sign-off.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter follows a clear progression: it opens with your reaction to the concert, moves to your own musical background, and then makes a request. This sequence helps the reader understand why you are writing, and the closing lines provide a suitable ending. Paragraphing also separates the main stages of the message. Some links between ideas could be smoother: for example, the move from describing the singer’s performance to your own musical interests is abrupt. You could connect these points with a sentence explaining how the concert inspired you. The request sentence contains several ideas in one long sequence, so dividing it into two sentences would make the progression easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use vocabulary relevant to music and performance, including “high energy,” “composition,” “vocal pitch,” and “boost my confidence.” These choices communicate your interests and the kind of support you want. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “recent concern” for the concert, “your musical instruments team,” and “perform so much good.” Spelling errors such as “voise,” “vollunteer,” and “comsider” also reduce accuracy. Aim for natural phrases such as “recent concert,” “your band,” and “performed very well.” A broader set of precise performance-related expressions, used accurately, would make the letter sound more fluent and polished.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple statements and longer structures, particularly when explaining how the singer might help you. The main message remains understandable, but errors in verb forms, sentence construction, and punctuation are frequent enough to affect smooth reading. For example, “which is held last weekend” needs a past-tense form, while “I had enjoyed” is not the natural tense for describing your reaction to a completed concert. The request beginning “I will request you if” is also structurally awkward, and the long sentence that follows would benefit from clearer clause boundaries. Practise accurate past-tense descriptions and polite request forms, and use shorter sentences when combining several requests.
