Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Daniel,
I am writing to express my satisfaction with your performance at the concert I attended 2 days ago.
I have been a great fan of yours for years, but hearing you perform live was a wonderful experience. Your voice and ability to connect with the audience made the event an unforgettable one. I enjoyed every bit of your performance.
As someone who is passionate about music and have been singing in my local church since I was 10-years old. Recently, I started learning how to play the keyboard because i hope to perform in one of your concert one day.
I was would be grateful if you could offer me some advice on how to improving my singing skills. If you don't mind, I would like you tobe my mentor and have the opportunity to visit your studio to receive a few singing lessons from you. Your guidance would mean a whole alot to me and help me develop my musical abilities.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours faithfully

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
You address all three points clearly: you praise Daniel’s live performance, describe your church singing and recent keyboard lessons, and ask for advice, mentoring, and singing lessons. The response also maintains a suitable, appreciative tone for writing to a performer. Details such as singing at church since childhood and wanting to perform at one of his concerts make your musical background personal and relevant. The request for help is clear, although the several forms of assistance could be prioritised or explained more specifically—for example, what aspect of singing you most want to improve. This is a complete and well-supported response; adding a little more focused detail to the request would make the ideas more fully developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5
The letter has a clear progression: it opens with the reason for writing, moves to your reaction to the concert, gives your musical background, and then makes a request before closing. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and links such as “but,” “Recently,” and “I look forward to hearing from you” help the reader follow the message. The organisation is effective overall, though the transition from your musical activities to the request could be smoother by explicitly connecting your keyboard learning and church singing to the advice you seek. The sentence beginning “As someone who is passionate about music” is also left incomplete, which briefly interrupts the flow. A complete sentence and a more explicit link between paragraphs would make the progression even more seamless.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use a suitable range of vocabulary for a personal letter, including positive descriptions such as “wonderful experience,” “unforgettable,” and “connect with the audience.” Phrases like “musical abilities” and “singing skills” also communicate your aims clearly. Some wording is less natural or precise, however: “express my satisfaction” sounds formal and slightly impersonal for praising a singer, while “a whole alot” is an inaccurate expression. “Perform in one of your concert” also shows imprecise word choice and form. These slips do not prevent understanding, and your vocabulary is adequate for the task, but more natural collocations and careful proofreading would improve flexibility and precision.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You attempt a mix of simple and more complex structures, including “Your voice and ability to connect with the audience made the event an unforgettable one” and the conditional request “If you don’t mind, I would like…”. Most of the message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors are noticeable. “As someone who is passionate about music and have been singing…” is a sentence fragment with a subject–verb agreement problem; “I was would be grateful” has an incorrect verb construction; and “how to improving” should use the base form after “to.” There are also errors in “one of your concert” and inconsistent capitalisation of “I.” Review sentence completeness, verb patterns, and agreement, while retaining your attempts at longer structures.
