Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Hassan,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing you this letter to the express how mesmerised i was by your performance last night. It was so energetic and kept my friends and I fully engaged till the very end. You sang your originals that stuck with me. I connect deeply with your genre of songs, quite literally obsessed with them. The beat is very addictive especially your recent release 'Rangeen'.

I myself am a singer by profession. I sing cover songs for parties and weddings. It is going well for me professionally but i want to upgrade myself. I have been following your journey from your first stage performance. You improved progressively and soon started producing music of your own. You have great influence on my life and i look up to you always as a mentor.

I would love if you could spare few minutes from your precious schedule and we could sit over coffee for you to review my work and would also appreciate if you could give me constructive criticism, also can give me the opportunity to shadow you. I will be patiently waiting for your response.

Yours faithfully,

Mahnoor

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

You address all three points clearly: you praise the concert, describe your work as a professional singer performing covers at parties and weddings, and request feedback and a chance to shadow Hassan. Details such as being engaged “till the very end” and following his progress make the praise personal and relevant. The request is also specific, which helps the reader understand what support you want. This is a strong, well-covered response, though a few ideas could be developed more fully—for example, you could explain what kind of work you would like him to review or what you hope to learn by shadowing him. A slightly more focused explanation of these aims would make the letter even more complete and persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall arrangement: it opens with your reaction to the performance, moves to your own musical background, and ends with your request. Paragraphing supports this progression, and phrases such as “I myself” and “I would love” help signal the shift between topics. However, some connections within sentences are less controlled. The final request combines several ideas—meeting for coffee, reviewing your work, giving criticism, and shadowing—in one long sentence, making the relationships between them harder to follow. The transition from admiration of Hassan to your own career could also be made more explicit. Separating the requests and using clear links between them would make the cohesion more consistently smooth.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a suitable range of vocabulary to express enthusiasm and musical experience, including “mesmerised,” “energetic,” “addictive,” “professionally,” and “constructive criticism.” These choices make your admiration clear and give the letter a personal tone. There are also some less natural or imprecise expressions: “your originals” would be clearer as “your original songs,” while “upgrade myself” is vague in this context. “I connect deeply with your genre of songs” is understandable but not idiomatic, and “spare few minutes from your precious schedule” sounds overly elaborate. These do not prevent understanding, but more natural collocations and precise wording would strengthen the overall control of vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, and most of the message remains easy to understand. For example, “I sing cover songs for parties and weddings” is clear, while the sentence about Hassan’s progress links several related ideas. Some grammatical errors remain, however. In “I am writing you this letter to the express,” the infinitive construction is incorrect; write “I am writing to express.” The final sentence is also overloaded and has an unclear structure: “I would love if you could … and we could … and would also appreciate…” Separate these requests and use complete, parallel clauses. Capitalise “I” consistently, and check articles and verb forms, as in “spare a few minutes” and “I would also appreciate.”
