Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear John,

Hope you are doing well.

I recently attened your concert at the Downtown hall near Toronto Musical garden. I am a big fan of your's since my childhood. I participated most of your musical concert all over the GTA area. Your music is always a therapy for me. I saw how the people around me is enjoying the song. Your composition was not too loud and it was very clear and understandable.

I have been learing Guithar since my childhood. However, I am not proficient on that because I do not have any tutor for correcting my mistakes. I practice guithar every day and night. Currenlty I am preparing a album song for my friend. I am planning to finish it this Monday.

I was searching for proper teacher for helping to finish my album song. I think you would the person I am looking for.

Please let me know the time. I am come to your place for correcting my unfinished album song.

Thanks,

Sebin

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three points: you praise the concert, describe your guitar practice and album project, and ask John to help you improve the unfinished song. Details such as attending concerts around the GTA and practising regularly make the letter personal and relevant. The request is understandable, but it is not fully specific: “Please let me know the time” does not explain whether you want a lesson, feedback on a recording, or a meeting, and “I am come to your place” leaves the arrangement unclear. The performance comments (“not too loud” and “clear and understandable”) are also less developed than your description of your own activities. Explain what particularly impressed you and propose a clear form of help to make the purpose of the letter more fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a coherent overall arrangement: it opens with your reaction to the concert, moves to your musical experience, and ends with your request. Paragraphing helps distinguish these main points, and the reader can follow the general progression. Some links between ideas are less smooth, however. “However” introduces your lack of proficiency, but the reason that follows could be connected more clearly to your daily practice. The final paragraph repeats the idea of seeking a teacher and then moves abruptly to asking for a time and visiting John. Use clearer transitions and make the request a single, logically connected sequence—for example, explain what help you need, then suggest how and when to arrange it. This would make the cohesion less mechanical and the ending more complete.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “concert,” “composition,” “proficient,” “tutor,” and “album song,” and your meaning is generally recoverable. There are also attempts at expressive language, such as calling the music “a therapy for me.” However, several spelling errors and unnatural word combinations reduce precision, including “attened,” “learing,” “Guithar,” and “preparing a album song.” Some phrases are vague or awkward, such as “participated most of your musical concert” and “I am a big fan of your's.” Aim for accurate spelling and more natural collocations, such as “attended your concerts,” “learning the guitar,” and “recording an album track.” A broader, more precise range would help you describe both the performance and the assistance you are requesting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mixture of short statements and longer sentences, including a contrast with “However” and a reason introduced by “because.” Most of the message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors affect clarity and control. For example, “I saw how the people around me is enjoying the song” has a subject–verb agreement problem and an inconsistent tense; “I am come to your place” uses an incorrect verb form; and “I think you would the person” is missing a verb. There are also issues with articles and possessive forms in “a album” and “your's.” Practise checking verb forms, agreement, and sentence completeness, especially when making requests. More accurate complex sentences would make your writing smoother and more assured.
