IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You live in a neighbourhood with a community hall that can be hired for local events. You and several other residents are hoping to arrange a regular evening activity there, and you have agreed to contact the hall manager. You have not met the manager before, so you need to explain your plans and find out whether the hall would be suitable.
Write a letter to the manager of the community hall. In your letter
- describe the weekly board-game evening you would like to hold and who would take part
- explain why the community hall would be a suitable place for this activity
- ask about available times, hire charges and the facilities provided
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir/Madam
I am writing to let you know that I am one of the residents in the neighbourhood where your community hall is established. We, residents are planning to organize regular evening activity at the hall because of that I would like to give you information regarding our arrangments and inquire about the availability and the charges for the facility.
We are thinking about hosting the weekly board-game evening and attendes will be the people from our locality. Different board games such as ludo, chess and monopoly will be played in a competitive manner by residents of different age groups for an ultimate cash prize that is collected by the host at the beginning of each game day.
Freezing temperatue outdoors has made it impossible to host our event at the public park. Due to our number of participants, we need spacious place because of that community hall would be a perfect place for our competition.
Moreover, I would like to enquire about the facilities offered by the hall such as food service, available time slots like if 5 p.m.- 6 p.m. is available or not and charges for the space like is it charged on hourly basis or is there any discounts or promotion available. For this, I would like to plan a meeting in-person or in the zoom call, whenever you have time. You can give me a call at this number [redacted phone] or you can email me at [redacted email] to set up a meeting.
Yours sincerely,
Bibek

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three requirements and maintains a clear, appropriate purpose. You describe a weekly board-game evening, name likely participants as local residents of different age groups, and give examples such as chess and Monopoly. You also explain that cold weather prevents using the park and that the hall offers the space needed. Your questions cover time slots, charges and facilities, with food service included. To make the plans more fully developed, clarify the expected number of participants and whether the cash-prize competition is definitely part of the event; this detail may also affect whether the manager considers the activity suitable. The request for a meeting is relevant, but could be more directly tied to confirming the hall’s suitability.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The information is arranged in a sensible sequence: purpose, activity details, reasons for choosing the hall, and practical questions. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and linking expressions such as “Moreover” and “Due to” make the relationships between ideas clear. This gives the letter a coherent overall progression. Some connections are less smooth, however: “because of that” is repeated in the opening and the suitability paragraph, and the long final paragraph combines several questions with contact details and a meeting request. The phrase “For this” also has an unclear reference. To strengthen cohesion, use more varied links and separate the practical enquiries from the closing request.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range for the purpose, including relevant terms such as “board-game evening,” “participants,” “time slots,” and “hourly basis.” The examples of games and the reference to different age groups make the activity easy to understand. There are, however, several spelling and word-choice problems, including “arrangments,” “attendes,” and “temperatue.” Some phrases are also unnatural or imprecise: “the hall is established” and “ultimate cash prize” do not express your meaning as naturally as “the hall is located” and “a cash prize.” These errors do not prevent understanding, but more accurate spelling and collocations would make the letter sound more fluent and professional.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The letter includes a mix of simple and complex structures, for example the opening purpose clause and the explanation beginning “Due to our number of participants.” The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors occur. In “We, residents are planning,” the comma interrupts the subject; “We residents are planning” is more natural. “Regular evening activity” needs an article or plural form, and “attendees will be the people” would be clearer as “the attendees will be local residents.” The questions embedded in the final sentence also need more controlled structure, such as “whether 5–6 p.m. is available” and “whether charges are hourly.” Review articles, sentence boundaries and indirect-question forms to improve accuracy.
