Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I hope you are doing well. I am Aakansha local resident of the town. I am writing this letter to enquire about the availability of the community hall for arranging a regular board-game evening for elderly people of the town.

For the past few weeks me and other several residents were looking for arranging a regular evening activity for elderly people. We decided to conduct the borad-game evening on every Sunday from 5 PM to 7 PM. The primary reason behind this is to engage interested old age people into social activities, help them make friends, and also get a chance to feel refreshed.

We looked up for multiple locations but they far from our residence. The closest we found was the community hall. The hall is 5 minutes away on walking distance from our township. This facilitates our elderly people to commute weekly without any inconvenience. Also, it is very spacious and well-equipped for the baord games.

I would like you to confirm the available timings, hiring charges, and faciltiies included in the charges. Once you confirm we will be able to make all the ncessary arrangements for our local residents to have some fun time.

Yours faithfully,

Aakansha

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three requested points and maintains a clear, appropriate purpose. You describe a weekly Sunday session from 5 to 7 p.m., identify elderly local residents as participants, and explain that the activity would help them socialise and feel refreshed. The hall’s proximity and spaciousness are also relevant reasons for choosing it. Your closing request covers available times, hire charges and included facilities. To make the ideas more fully supported, clarify whether Sunday is your preferred time or a fixed plan, and give a little more detail about the group or the equipment and room setup you would need. Overall, the purpose and key information are clear, though some details could be developed further.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The information follows a clear sequence: you introduce the enquiry, explain the proposed activity, justify the venue, and finish with questions for the manager. Paragraphing supports this progression, and linking expressions such as “The primary reason” and “Also” help connect related points. The letter is easy to follow overall. Some phrasing makes the links less smooth—for example, “For the past few weeks me and other several residents were looking for arranging” is difficult to process, and “Once you confirm” refers broadly to several requested details. Use more direct transitions and make references precise, such as specifying that you would proceed once the manager confirms the time, cost and facilities. This would make the cohesion more flexible and natural.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for the purpose, including relevant terms such as “availability,” “regular evening activity,” “social activities,” “spacious” and “well-equipped.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and the reader can understand the request. However, some word combinations are inaccurate or unnatural, including “looking for arranging,” “on walking distance” and “feel refreshed.” There are also spelling errors in “borad-game,” “baord games,” “faciltiies” and “ncessary,” which reduce accuracy. Aim for natural collocations and proofread carefully; for example, say “organise a weekly evening” and “within a five-minute walk.” More precise vocabulary for the group and the facilities would also strengthen the letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response includes both simple sentences and some longer structures, such as the sentence explaining that the activity would help participants make friends and feel refreshed. Meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors occur. In “I am Aakansha local resident,” an article is needed before “local resident”; “me and other several residents were looking” has an incorrect subject construction and tense; and “The hall is 5 minutes away on walking distance” uses an incorrect prepositional pattern. The sentence beginning “For the past few weeks” would also be clearer with a present-perfect form to describe an activity continuing up to now. Practise accurate articles, verb forms and sentence patterns while retaining your attempts at complex sentences.
